Alot of people have been annoyed with ati powerplay on the 38xx series powerplay is what drives the 3d / 2d clock speeds.
this can happen during game play when the gpu isnt driven enough and can result in a sudden drop in fps at times.
There is however a 3870 that doesnt have powerplay and runs at full 3d clocks all the time.
BUT HOWEVER it does have its downside.

IM talking about the triplex 3870 by parasouls.

1.Its cheap and has a redesigned board with cheap capasitors.

2.it uses cheap aftermarket cooling which cools the gpu great but the memory has no ramsinks

3.on some versions overclocking isnt possible i think its locked from the bios.

Heres the card.

this retails at £111 UK its one of the cheapest.

With ramsinks this could be a cheap good preformance crossfire setup with a good constant flow of fps.

You could always mod your BIOS to run at 3D clocks all the time, or if you are OCing using Rivatuner, it sets the 3D clocks all the time.

Thanks for lookin' out though Nitro.

does riva tuner do this for the X2? i use it for fan speed but i aint used it to overclock yet

I think the way Rivatuner overclocks is it sets cards to 3D mode once OCing is enabled and then you set your clocks. There's no way you could OC under 2D mode anyway.

I'll confirm this weekend with my multimeter if you like. It should work with the X2...don't see why not.

That card would be great if the bios wasn't locked to 805mhz, its actually 800mhz but there is always a little leeway. In rivatuner the 2D clocks for the X2 are stuck at 300/900. The Diamond models with the unlocked bios only affect the 3D clocks. The 2D clocks are overkill anyway @ the X2 level of power. The only thing that matters to us is the 3D & rivatuner fix them while killing powerplay just fine.

There is a temporary fix for the power play bug directly from Sapphire. Read the OP found in this thread (http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=55250)

That fix isn't by Sapphire. The workaround is copied from a certain forum by the op who is just a normal user.
