The title says it all...is this a bad card or what? I have been getting random game shut downs and I have tested every other part of my pc.....

Look at the GPU clock speed.

the temps are fine....as far as I can tell....I leave the charts on and the temp isnt ever higher than 50c.

try reinstalling the games. ive had games shut down like that for no reason then reinstall them and it works fine. try lowering the OC on your gpu or setting it back to default also.

Try the new Gpu-z 0.2.8.

You may have two separate problems. Gpu-z 0.2.8 will read the card correctly, however the gpu-z you are using shouldn't cause a shutdown.

I grabbed the new gpuz, and it reads everything correctly. I know gpuz is not causing the shutdown...i was just wondering if I had a bad card. Im kind of stuck until Tuesday. I have reinstalled drivers after cleaning them all off....and I still have the same random restart issue. I put the clock and mem. speeds back to stock....off the oc. Im getting a new HD on Tuesday and putting a fresh install of vista on there. I will know more then.

Are you getting a VPU recovery? If not, it's probablly not the card shutting your system down. Are all of your temperatures good in your system? Overclocked? Is your RAM set at the correct timings and voltage?

Yes, I am getting the VPU recovery. All my timings and voltage are correct. My temps are fine on my system, the CPU sits at 28c idle and 46c load.

Look at the GPU clock speed.

Try lowering the CORE clock by 10 MHz :D

So I ran mem tests, Prime 95 and video tests and nothing is crashing or showing errors. It must be something else.

But my new question......is the temp for my ram on the video card too high?

I wouldn't say it's too high - It'd be nice if it were cooler .... but, it's within limits.

so what would the limit be?

Atitool doesnt properly test video card stability anymore. If you are getting crashes in games, try lowering the overclock and see what happens. Try looping the crysis benchmark or something.

naa, your card is just superclocked. @ 40000%.

Uninstall ATi Tool, the current version is not compatable with the hd48xx series and may be causing the crashes.

It's possibly the drivers that are constantly crashing. I had the same exact issue. Reinstall the drivers, but you have to make sure that you remove COMPLETELY the current ones you have now.

Thanks for the Idea, but I have done that 3 times already using cc cleaner, driver sweeper and driver cleaner pro in safe mode after uninstalling the drivers and components. Thats the best way I know of to get all the crap off to install a fresh driver...

Since you are getting the VPU recovery, it means that your card is crashing. Usually, it is the driver that is doing it. After it crashes and it comes back, does it show a bubble saying that "the driver atiblahblah.gtl has crashed and recovered" or something to that effect?

yeah, it comes up with the option to report the error to ati.....but the card also wont let me restart my system without messing up the picture so I have to shut it down and then start it to restart.

Yep, it be the drivers matey! Arg! If you have a spare machine, try it on that. If it still crashes, you might have a more serious problem. Try the drivers straight from ATI too.
