if i get a 1 gig stick of ram and put it in a slot next to a 512mb stick will that mess up the latency or speed?
is it better to have two matching sticks?

Using matching sticks you could run dual channel, if your chipset supports this.
If not it won't really matter as long as it isn't a slower stick.

at the price it is it aint worth trying to salvage just the one 512 stick.. better to go two 1 gig sticks and be done with it.. i think u can mix em up thow perhaps not in the same bank.. not entirely sure thow..

if your mobo supports dual channel...just get an identical 512mb stick...if not then do whatever...yeah it all works...if you have the money, get two 1gig sticks, and sell the 512
