I suggest you get the Connect 3d XT (non PE) bios. Best overclocking bios and you start with safe 500/500. If your card can do 520/560 easy you still can flash a XT PE bios later on or edit the XT bios to the clocks you like with Rabit 1.6.

Will any non ATI bio flash to 16 pipes?

as long as it's a XT or XT PE BIOS... with the exception of the 16 pipe pro BIOS or if you'd flashed with the Gigabyte Flashtool and BIOS, then flashed back to a pro... most cases you'd still have 16 pipes. Which makes the Flashtool from W1zzard very useful for those with broken pipes to get past being stuck with 16 pipes...

Do you recommend starting out with the connect xt bios?

I had almost every bios out there on my card. The connect 3d 500/500 was the best. It even OCs better on the core but i have no idea why. I am not the only one reporting this. You get better memory OC because of it's somewhat relaxed timings.
People say you trade mhz for slower timings but benchmarks with games and 3dmark proofed that the more on mhz gives slightly more performance still despite the slower timings.
The connect3d bios also runs the fan at 66% wich makes your card slightly cooler. I didn't notice an audible difference on the fan.
