Brand new computer, I actualy took it out of the wrapper to wipe the HD and install XP, it is a HP g60-230US. Everytime i boot from the XP CD it goes all the way to "Starting Windows" Then blue screens.... Any ideas? Works fine when i boot vista.

Edit: It says "Starting windows" in the bottom left of the screen in the setup menu, Like the bios when installing a new OS. I didnt mean it is actualy booting up XP.

a lot of oem computers wont allow you to put XP back on them.

But try getting in the bios and turning off ahci and make it ide. that should let you at least boot. Most oem computers are configured to run on AHCI mode instead of raid or ide mode. Doing this may allow it to work. get back with me and let me know if it works.

Cheers, good luck.

Honestly, that should be the only thing holding it back from working.

What other options do you have for bios in the hdd section? any?

There should definitely be an option in the BIOS, it might not be labeled intuatively though.

Sometimes, it is labled SATA Mode and Normal Mode, or IDE Mode. Just look for any settings relating to the hard drive controller. It might even be under integrated peripherals or advanced options, or something similar. Search everywhere, I've seen them hide this option in the stupidest of places...

OEM computers are locked for this exact reason. They don't want you changing stuff. At this point you have only two options.

1. Find a compatible BIOS to Flash over the one that came with it. Voids warranty, possible damage to BIOS chip (not designed to be Flashed).

2. Get use to Vista.

OEM computers are not locked in any way to prevent XP or any other OS from being installed. However, XP's old installer sometimes can't handle the new hardware present in newer machines. Finding drivers once XP is installs can also be a pain, as a lot of newer machines that come with Vista do not have drivers provided by the manufacturer, so you either have to know what hardware is in the machine, and get the drivers from alternate sources, or be stuck with limitted functionality.

I too much agree with #2 though. Get used to Vista, and now Win7, XP is dieing...

if vista boots up to the point where you can install it then you might be able to use this to force xp to load from cd.

1.Boot into vista and delete the partison
2.Crate a new partison
3.At this point insert the xp cd and restart

Because you said vista boots up, i'm guessing it comes up (Press space bar to boot from cd?) if so xp should also popup this option so remeber to press spacebar or any key can't quite remeber lol.

oo if the hardrive is SATA you will need a xp cd with service pack 2 to auto detect the hardrive if i remeber right. if its a realy old version of xp then you will need a floppy to install the SATA driver.

Compare that to all the drivers available for Vista...

There are Modem, network, video, chipset, wireless, etc...

XP isn't going to find any of that by itself, it never does, and manually hunting them down is a pain.

Just put Vista back on it.

i love the limited resources xp uses and thats why i love it for simple functionality but the drivers indeed are a pain, sometimes drivers are never made for the peripherals and stablity could also be a problem. put a down on windows 7 :P
