3-4 years is a looong time in the computer world. 22nm doesnt really surprise me. heck, 3-4 years ago we were in the 90nm-120nm range and look at where we are now.

it does, :..secretly..: , just calls it a different company. ;)

Their former CEO Hector Ruiz is the head of the foundry. What do you make of that ? Its another AMD company

I have a feeling AMD has something big up their sleeves. They have been getting killed by intel for far too long now. Its time for them to fight back! I really hope the Am3 socket delivers. This will be good news for everyone because it will even the competition and make lower prices.

Bingo. I nearly fell off my chair laughing when I read that news article. They have been planning something for a while now, and from what I can tell this is gonna be a big help for them. Basically that Abu Dhabi company (the second part of The Foundry (which to me sounds like something from a video game )) is gonna shell out for all the chip making while AMD itself focuses on research and developing some sweeeeet shit. Good play on their part.

Considering they are building the new fab in upstate NY, i can see 22nm coming. They wouldn't build a plant and put old technology in there. That would be dumb :banghead:

Intel is going to be at 22nm in 2012 too, so I don't see how that's a good thing. That just means for three years intel will continue to produce chips w/ a lower fabrication process. That wouldn't really make much sense anyway, amd is just going to do 65nm while intel is at 45nm, moves down to 32nm, then match them at 22nm? Seems like a pretty bad plan, also the new Denab's are planned to be 45nm.

i could be wrong but i thought i saw a road map for intel saying there 22nm was comming out in 2011, i think for a while we have seen the last of the big gains from dropping die sizes, as it was said earlier 3>4 years ago we were at 120 nm stage so we are 2.6 times smaller at 45nm, its the 10>15nm range i cant wait to see in 5>6 years (guestimate) or so :)

**edit** i would be good to see gpu's/ram/chipsets/ drop die sizes, thats where i think the real gain will be made
