Well I am possibly in the market for upgrading my gaming rig and donating its old parts to a possible media server / HTPC. I currently have a 680i and it has done great for me, but it seems to me that the Intel boards really are better overclockers in general and I dont care that much about multiple GPUs. I would like to keep it but I am highly considering a Q9550 for my new CPU and from what I have read the 45nm quads dont work on the 680 boards.

I dont want to wait for Nehalem because it will take a while for all the early adopters to blow their wads and let the prices come down and I could take advantage of that to get the older stuff.

Basically, do the 45nm quads work on the P45s and X38s/48s, are they better overclocking boards, and does PhysX work on them? I like Nvidia and all, but overclocking on the 680i can be so frustrating and the known issue of the raid controllers not liking ncq drives and being buggy in general isnt comforting either.

I dont know that much about the intel boards, so any input is appreciated!!

If you aren't going to run SLI or crossfire P45s are amazing.

P45's are about the best option for the Q9550/45nm chips. The p45's overclock the cpu like crazy and have minimal resitance to crossfire in 8x lanes. The x48's dual 16x pci-e lanes are a big difference for high end cards, so if your running dual 4870x2's you might notice the preformance boost.

The P45 boards have no trouble with Phyx at the moment. Vista has troubles running dual drivers for ATi and Nvidia cards, but Win7 looks to be the key! I'll be testing more with my set up as my experience with the new hardware goes!

p45 is fine for crossfire... even the big dog cards. EFF you ppl and your "ewww... p45's suck for crossfire"

YOUR WRONG!

i have the #1 spot on alcapones 3dmark06 comp here on TPU on my asus p5q3 dlx p45 board.

p45 has way higher FSB than x38/x48 and p35

Yup. I see no reason to get a X48 unless you have a ton of money to spend on a board or your doing 3 way crossfire, but a P45 is perfect for Overclockers and Crossfire!

From the review's I've found the preformance is 5% on average. There are some games that preform better but on average the difference is not worth it.

Thanks for the quick replies, another question I had was how well does PhysX work with mix branded GPUs in XP (if at all..) I am highly considering picking up the 4870x2 and I have an old 8800GTS 640mb that would work just fine for PhysX

I am so tempted to sell half of my rig and upgrade to a p45 board. But I don't have the money and my current rig fits my needs fine so I have to hold my self back. Its so tempting though :(

Yeah but it is not legally available to most people and it shouldn't be run as your default OS considering that it is still in early beta stages.

Just to side step on the PhysX for a quick sec. Would even somethng like a 8400 GS be good for this?

I have the 680i board too. I like it, and its been stable. I havn't OCed because my room is so tiny, and heat is an issue with my Q6600. But I was wondering if "That blue" PCI slot would be worth putting anything in it.

Any 8 series and up card is good for PhysX. A 8400GS is what I use and it works great.

I guess 425 aint bad lol. Nah, went i build my rig i'll let it settle for a while then start looking into OC everything. So from what ive heard round the forums P45 is great for OC, which can give better value for money in my opinion. The only downside is 8x dual crossfire, but if the performance difference between that n dual 16x Xfire isnt that much ill just go for a P45.

I dont mean to piggyback someone elses thread, but what do you guys recommend for an e8400. For a P45 mobo i mean?

So I am looking at the Maximus II Formula and the ASUS P5Q Deluxe.. what are the differences between these two other than the big price swing obviously..

Also there are lots of P5Q boards on newegg but I dont really see the differences between the P5Q Deluxe and Pro etc..
