Hi everyone,

I am assembling a new system for my day-to-day use and also for my professional work. I also do lots of gaming during the free time :) The main purpose of my system is to work on audio and video editing along with animation softwares like Autodesk Maya, Combustion, Fusion and 3DS Max and also Adobe CS3 Creative Suite(a lot!), AVID. Apart from this i play a lot of FIFA and FPS games in it. I don't have any experience on building a solid rig for this production purpose. So i would like to get suggestions from the experienced members of this forum.

My budget for the system is around US $1100 - $1200 (55-60k INR).

The system specs that i have in mind is as follows,

Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad 9550 (or) AMD Phenom X4 Quad-Core 9950

Motherboard - ASUS P5Q Deluxe (or) ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe

RAM - G.Skill F2 6400 CL4D-4GB PI-Black

GPU - ATI HD4870

HDD - Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB

DVD Drive - LITE-ON iHAS220-08

K/B + Mouse - Logitech

Headphones - ( Need some Suggestions ? )

Monitor - Viewsonic (VG1921wm or VX1962wm)

Cabinet - Cooler Master 690 ATX Mid Tower

PSU - Corsair HX620

UPS - APC 800 KVA

I would like to fit everything within this budget. And since i don't have any previous experience i would like to get suggestion from the members. :)

(I would prefer the Intel over AMD)

Looks alright... what I would build with the $ would probably be a little different, but oh well...

I would totally go for the Intel over the Phenom. :toast:

i reccomend getting one of the faster 640gb drives as you'll have more space and a faster drive than any 500gb you could buy. the price is similar too.

+1 on the wd 640gb drives they are awesome,

im currently (well last time i looked) the fastest single non velocoraptor drive on the hdtune thread :toast:

and +1 on the intel a lot faster than that phenom 9950 aside from those 2 things thats gonna be one nice build :toast:

get a xigmatek cpu cooler. i'd get the HDT-s1284 for the Q9550.

make sure you get the E0 q9550 if you plan to OC it a good ways.

Just wait. Core i7 is coming and it's main feature is multimedia acceleration. I am pretty sure that a lot of those programs you mentioned would benefit from 8 threads. There is no point in buying this system now. Wait for a month and then do it...

fully agreed, while the i7 won't be much of a improvement over a core2 for gaming, your professional work is the stuff where the i7 are suppose to spank the core2's

But waiting for the i7 could increase my current budget. And since i am in need of the system now for my work, i have to build it soon.

System looks solid. I'd just add at least 1 more drive for storing your audio/video on.
Really does help performance when editing audio or video.

And yes, the Intel rig would be the better option right now methinks.

For the headphones - depends on how much you want to spend, if you want surround etc. For an audio purists point of view the Grado SR60 is a great bang for the buck at $70 approx; Some ppl however think its too bright and lacks the bass. Check out Headfi forums for endless discussions. If you end up not liking Grado, I will have another suggestion for you with better bass but less clarity...

Well actually once the i7 is out, your current intel build will probably cost less as long as you dont actually opt for the i7!!

right now if you use microsoft live/paypay and ebay you get 30% back off your buy it now price. I just need the video card and I got the system for under 900 after cash back. Take a look at my post for all the components and prices I paid after cash back.

dont get DDRII 800mhz (PC6400) if you want to overclock... get DDRII 1066mhz rather... will allow you more headroom for your OC ;)
