I am looking into a NAS that will hook up to a LAN. The purpose of this is to create a master data location where files can be accessed, shared, and saved for multiple computers. I have a plan to use 4x 1TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration. However, I've tried to research a good NAS box to handle the drives. I knew off hand that Infrant was a good brand, but they were purchased by Netgear and have gone to the gutters (via word of mouth). The current one I'm looking at seems to be a decent fit for the price and features. Again, I'm not too familiar with the brands or what would work better.

Any advice with this is appreciated.

You should check out HET's FS thread. He's got a really nice looking NAS, and knowing HET it's probably close to brand new.

What should I type in the search? Came back as no such user as "het." (I don't know users on here, so being specific would help.) That or a direct link would help.

I'm not really looking at building another computer for the purpose of a NAS. Space is limited where the NAS will be.

I don't understand. You don't need to.

I'm more concerned with getting feedback to what brands/models I should consider or avoid. The thread doesn't really tell me about Thecus or their reputation/reliability other than one user has one.

Thecus is one of the best, if not the best brands for NAS. Perhaps you should try searching for NAS reviews. http://www.nasdevices.com/

Thecus and Qnap seem to be the most popular brands of NAS right now.

LOL. This threading is starting to look like the Abbott and Costello "who's on first" skit.

What about Promise? It's within the same price range as the Synology one I posted first.

Also, what other features should be of concern? I figure transfer speeds which are also limited to the network speed anyway. I don't know if RAID rebuild time is really important to me.

I wish DantheBanjoman was here right now. He's the networking guru... I'm a bit of a n00b at network attatched storage, but Promise has been around for quite a while. Any particular model? I guess the things you want to look for is, how many drives/space it can hold, speed, ease of use, and price.

Newegg only had one model available. It's the SmartStor NS4300N.

Assumptions are correct. Four drives are plenty, and 2TB of space will be suffice. Ease of use is great since I'm the type to just "set it and forget it." Reliability and support are important to me as well. I keep reading on Newegg reviews that support tends to be non-existance with some companies (e.g. Netgear). I would like to stay within the $400 max unless it's justified to spend more for some features that will benefit me.

Promise is a old school company that does make a good product, now they also have a few pieces of junk, not sure how their NAS devices are, I know they are pretty easy on the RMA aspect.
