No, bad idea. This is a tech forum. Not only that but politics always brings out the worst in people, especially on topics as big as the election, I could barely make it through the first 3 pages of that huge thread, I'd hate to see good people get temporary or even permenant bans because a "heated debate" got too heated...

Every forum I have been to eventually has someone suggest this. When the idea goes through, people browbeat each other and make bad feelings all around. Eventually, the forum falls apart after everyone gets pissed at everyone.

well pc perspective has done an EXCELLENT job with their community and moderation. they have many things we cant. many of the members are mods and thus the community is well managed. there is an almost 1200 pages in a thread dedicated to pictures of hot girls and what not. they also have the lightning round, which is a place for fast paced debating between members.. the lightning round is properly moderated and there are few to none problems there.

we have a long way to go before we can do some of the stuff pc perspective can unfortunantly.

No. This is not a political site. And while we saw incredible numbers of posts in the "Who will make a better President" forum, it's only natural. The whole world watched this last election. Besides I saw a lot of "Blood" spattered about in that thread. I have my political sites that I visit. No one is asking for a computer forum in there.

Panch mate wrong section you should post that in whats wrong with our forums at least there the mods will see it.

Why would we even want to go down that road? You don't seem to grasp what a PC hardware and gaming site means.

pcper is a smaller forum. Right now they have 29 members logged in and 162 guest visiting. We have 121 members logged in and 2324 guests visiting. The most people they ever had visit there forums in a single day was 1,353 and that was over a year ago compared to our 4,920 which was in September. I've been moderating this forum since 2005 when we were pcper's size or smaller. It is fair to say it was a much easier job back then, so it really is an unfair comparison. I would have to say, that unfortunately pcper has a long way to go before they can do some of the things we can, but it is a great community and I am sure they will be doing well for years to come.

yeah i agree that pcper is smaller, but the community there is much better. why? because a big percentage of the members are mods. theres much more moderation and much more people to keep things in check. they can do many things we can't just because they have enough moderation to stop things from getting out of control. i'm sure if we had a better moderating staff, we would be able to do it. as size increases, the amount of active moderators should increase too, which is what tpu lacks. at the time being we only have about 3-4 active mods (polaris,paulieg, and erocker). if there was more mods, the equation would be more balanced, and overall the modding situation would be better. look at what our active users looks like, compared to theres:

its just like with guns. if everyone in the country was armed, then there'd be arguably less violence. because when you'd pull out your gun.. the opponent or a nearby civilian would too, and so if you want to live, you'd be better off not pulling out your gun. same thing applies with moderating. the more mods.. the easier it is on each mod.. which allows mods to not get so worked up about modding and actually contribute to the information on the forums and continue with their regular posting. on pcper, many of the mods just post like regular users, and rarely use their powers, however when required, they do use them.

The two sections you posted do not correlate. Ours is the currently active users list, there's is all the members who have visited so far today.

We were supposed to get more mods recently, but it hasn't happened yet. I'll PM Urlyin to see how it is coming along.

what some posters don't understand itt is that having a politics forum (or any other kind of sub forum, for that matter) keeps other forums and threads on a board clear and free of the politics discussion (and other discussion) many of you think will just cause "flame wars" or w/e.
and that excessivie flaming, trolling, etc....would be strictly prohibited

obviously this a tech site board, but it doesn't mean ALL the forums within the board must be exclusively tech oriented. particularly if non tech discussion often spills out into the "General Nonsense" forum. adding more specific discussion forums would help keep that sort of....spillage from happening, as tech enthusiasts such as ourselves would then have sub forum(s) to discuss more then just "tech" with fellow board members

if anything its community building and may even help increase traffic on the site, as the forums will then be more diverse and posters will have less reason to "click off" when wanting to discuss something more then water cooling or overclocking

and it doesn't take much moderating to....moderate sub forums. i used to moderate a sub forum at a board much larger then this. a board which supports a music site...yet the board manages to maintain active forums on topics such as sports, politics, entertainment, computers, along with a host of other forums that deal with music, its primary focus

but, they also have sub forums to their "General Discussion" forum because they know music lovers have other interests, too

keeps things nice and tidy. and modding said forums is a snap. because everything is organized and neat

those who say "no. this is a tech board." well, it still would be. and think about it, if you don't like politics you would never see it here again. just don't visit the politics forum! its your choice

1. Those two charts don't relate. Theirs is "who visited today", a table even TPU forum root had, but had to be removed since it was cluttering the place. If we put that back up, half your screen is gone right there.

2. You might want to rephrase your statement:

"PCPer has an excellent Off-topic/General Nonsense/Non-tech part to its community"....which unfortunately, does not make it a better tech-forum alone.

My two bits: Politics is a hot topic because it effects virtually everything we do in one form or another. For instance, it is hard to talk about CDs, DVDs, and subsequent media without mentioning the strong ties it has to the DMCA of 1998 and Sony DADC's intimate relationship with policing software. We also can't forgot when Microsoft almost had to break up into independent companies due to anti-trust lawsuits. It doesn't matter how hard you try to separate "Tech" and "Politics," they will always intersect like the weaves of a basket. The only difference is to facilitate those instances--that is, to separate legislative oriented news from the hardware/software news--or not.

I really don't care either way as it really isn't a major issue. The greatest advantage I see in making a distinction is that it lures the political-tech savvy types as well as the hardware-/software-tech savvy types. I don't consider myself political-tech savvy but I have encountered a few on other forums that are. On one hand, you don't like these types of people because they tend to be the bearer of bad news pointing out laws that were passed that further limit freedoms on the Internet. On the other hand, maybe enough people will get annoyed about their government to do something about it. It is generally a depressing subject but important to the future of technology nevertheless.
