help picking out an nvidia card that can fit into microatx case

so i need a nice nvidia gpu that is fast BUT can fit into the short end of a microatx case. i measured and it has to be less than 9 inches in length (that's what she said) and as i understand it most of these new awesome cards are practically a foot long. i checked on newegg and they dont give dimension specs. help!

I would say a 8600GTS would be about the size. I put my 8800GT in a Microatx case tight fit but it still fit lol

never came across anything like that but maybe there is. If you would like i can tell you how long a 7900GS is and how long a 8800GT is i have both of them close by and i can measure them

Does it have to be nvidia? This palit 4850 looks like its 8, 8 1/2 inches.

yea because im running the nvidia nforce chipset for my mobo and im doing lots of virtualization so nv drivers are importnant. that card is the prefect size i believe. so something that speed but nvidia! we are getting closer!

I was in the same boat as you were. Something like a OEM spec'ed 9600gt has fitted in my case just fine.

yea but that is a little to slow for my tastes! im not looking for an amazing card, but something slightly faster so i can play fallout 3 at a nice res with high settings. what do you think about the asus i posted?

As for that asus 9800gtx+...

A pci-e 16x slot is 3.5inches long. So take the newegg picture of the card and use that as a measurement to figure out the rest of the cards length. From what I can tell, the card is ~11 inches long.

hrm, well with that in mind i would say it actually looks ~ 9 inches. how do you figure 11?

Well twice the pci-e connector of the card will be 7in + the ~1.75-2 additional inches at the start. So your looking for a card which is double the pci-e connector length

you may want something fast but i think the 9600GT or a 8800GT (non reference) maybe all that you can fit in the case

alright so like a moron i realized i have a little more room to work. i didnt notice that on the motherboard side the hdd casing actually recesses so i think i can go with that asus card!! im gonna give it a go!

With with actual measurement, rather than eyeballing it (that is how I got 11in), I get is 10.25inches.

well if 69er's card in 9 inches than that asus is definately 10.5. that will indeed fit given my new measurements.

My 9600gt is also 9inches, to be more exact, 8.75in...for its double the pci-e, so 1.75 + 3.5 + 3.5 = 8.75 (see pic).

and here is a 8800gts G92...

See how its double?

and my rig...as you see, 9 inches is the absolute max that I can spare.

well now that i take a good look at my case im pretty sure i can make the asus fit at 10.5-11 inches. before i thought that the FDD cage was completely attached to the optical drive cage but there is actually some space for it.

You can just go with a normal 9800GTX+ also, they are 10.5" long, and the PCI-E connectors are on the side, so the wires won't be sticking out the back making the card longer(very useful in tight cases

).

Otherwise, you can see if you can find an 8800GTS 512MB. It is about 9.5" and only marginally weaker than the 9800GTX.
