I'm getting ready to build my first computer and I need as much help as I can get. I have a $700 budget. Should I build one now or wait until after the holiday season? I need everything other than keyboard, mouse, monitor, and OS.

What would be a good build now for $700?

First off, do you have any rabid brand loyalty issues? Along the lines of ATI vs nVidia or Intel vs AMD. As for the waiting portion, maybe not till after the holidays but I'm pretty certain there will be another price slash on the current line up of Intel processors due to the impending release of i7. Of course I could be horribly wrong.

Sorry I was a little vague

  1. Budget: How much money are you willing to spend on the new build?
    $700
  2. Brands: Are there any brands of components you want or don't want?
Nothing refurbished please but otherwise no real preference.
  3. Multitasking: Will you be multitasking with this computer and if so, how much?
    Gaming and movies
  4. Gaming: Will you be gaming and if so, how much and how new are the games?
I play way too much for my own good. I play mostly Warhammer, WoW, and Fallout 3, currently, and I play new stuff as they are released.
  5. Calculations: Will you be doing any intense calculations or media encoding?
    No
  6. Overclocking: Do you plan on overclocking and if so, how much?
If it'll make a major difference, I would OC. This is one area I probably would need the most help on.
  7. Storage: How much storage will you need and what will you be storing?
I have an external drive for media storage. I mainly need this rig to play games. So maybe around 300-500gb
  8. Legacy Support: Will you need support for older hardware like parallel, serial, or PS/2 devices?
I have a PS/2 switch but I'm thinking about getting a new USB switch, so it doesn't matter.
  9. Operating System: Do you want Windows XP or Vista, or Linux compatibility?
    I will be installing XP
  10. Case: Do you want help selecting a case and if so, how big do you want it?
Yes please. I like something mid-size. Preferably something that's easier to work with.
  11. Accessories: Do you want a keyboard, mouse, or other items included?
    No
  12. Recycled Components: Will you be reusing any components you already have?
    No
  13. Monitor: If you want a monitor, what size do you want and should it be widescreen?
    No monitor needed
  14. Stores: Do you have any online stores that you prefer to purchase from?
I like newegg and mwave. They're close to me.
  15. Location: What country do you live in?
    USA

I'm just going to stick with my trusty CRT from the year 2000 until it bites the dust. Image quality is still great after 8 years. Should I add some 3rd party coolers? Should I get a CPU cooler to OC the 8400? I heard that people OC those up to 4ghz on air. I probably won't go for that high of an OC.

Looks good zithe. But I think I want a SLI MB just in case I want to add a card later on. Also, I'm going to bite the bullet and get GTX. I've never really splurged on video cards in the past and I want to see what good graphics looks like...

I will get the cooler like you suggested cdawall.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to really enjoy this build!

It's about an $65 difference right now with the combo deal between E8500 and E8400. Do you think it's worth it? I heard that you can OC e8500 to 4.75 but with very good cooling.

Hmm if it's a combo deal then it won't be worth an extra 65. Well the diff in oc is about half a ghz dunno if that qualifies an extra 65 usd
