NV allows Non-Reference GTX Cards

On the other side, NVIDIA recently authorizes its partners to design non-reference GeForce GTX200 card on their own, which will help reduce price and improve marketing share. Relative products will be shown at the beginning of 2009 if everything goes well.

about damn time, Nvidia allowed non-reference coolers on their cards ,

I'm pretty sure non-reference cooelers have always been allowed(which is why eVGA is able to sell cards with waterblocks already), this article is talking about the PCB itself.

waterblocks maybe, but not non-reference coolers and PCB's .

not an air non-reference cooler, which Nvidia never allowed anyone to do with their high end cards. 8800GTX and ultra had water blocks, but not non-reference air coolers

That isn't true at all, eVGA had at least one 8800GTX with a non-reference cooler the 8800GTX ACS3.

The fact isn't that they can't use non-refence coolers, they just don't want to. And the ones that do want to use non-reference coolers also want non-reference PCB's and usually don't manufacture a card with non-reference cooling until they also use a non-reference PCB. There is nothing stopping any manufacturer from using a non-reference cooling solution if they wanted to.
