Brother is buying back his PC from me.

He gave me this computer, now he's buying it back for $450, and I hardly game at all.

So...

You guys need to help tell me what I need to fit my needs.

What I'll be doing with my rig:
DVR/PVR with a TV tuner and a giant HDD.
Lots of Office/web apps
Counter Strike/Starcraft/Diablo (Hard shit to run, I know).

But yeah, what should I make sure I get to ensure I can do this as smoothly and ridiculously multitaskingly as possible.

Judging by what you want to do man. I would go for a am2 build with GA-MA78GM-S2H. i have one and the onboard gfx is really good. will easily play those games you mentioned. So you won't need to buy another gfx card. That board also has HDMI and good audio, so it is well suited for a PVR/HTPC type machine. Just grab an am2 cpu, a tuner and a couple of hdd's and your on your way. Nice n cheap too.

hmmmm lowest price i saw on the 4830 was 109 on the egg. did you mean a cheaper on closer to the 4650, his budget is around 450 i'm assuming, so that would bump it to 500+

maybe, but he does play CSS not sure what resolution but i like to have max aa when i'm scoped, plus he says he plays starcraft :toast:

(one of the best games ever) and starcraft 2 is coming out on december 3rd so he mite want to play that, and with the HD 4650 offering twice the performance of the HD 4550 for only 5 bucks more there no reason not to get it.

EDIT:
either one of the builds, mine or shadowfolds will serve you well, though his will save you bout 35 bucks or so, if you don't plan on really upgrading i'd get his....basterd :roll:

the 4850e CPU is a great chip. It runs cool and clocks good too highly recommend it.

haven't used anything else on the list but they all look good too.

And I'm liking the look of these builds, but I'll probably end up spending closer to 1k$ on whatever I replace it with :roll:

there is a barebone from asus that is very cheap. it includes mobo, case and psu, so you put a 20 dolar 3450, a 60 athlon x2 a couple of big hdd and your tv tuner and you are done

i'll agree with drunken here - i've got the same board in my media PC, and the onboard graphics will hammer the old games, while leaving room for a dedicated card at a later date.

780G's rule. I got a ASUS M3A series and its been going strong for almost a year(or since they came out) so I highly recommend them. No idea on the OCability but I got a 9500 at 2.6ghz in it.

i got a 4000+ to 2.65GHz on my one. (250 FSB)
The gigabyte has advantages when using it in a HTPC setup because it supports DTS interactive (real time DTS encoding)
