Hello there, new here :)

been asking questions and i'm wanting to do a small upgrade to my system.

First, i'm looking at these...

3850 Link (Price is good)
4670 Link (Seen the review and uhh.. is that 3850 better?)

i'm just a mid gamer so i don't play demanding games like Crysis or COD5. i do play Counterstrike:Source and Left4Dead though. not sure on the Framerates but i have Left4Dead and Cs:S maxed out on max Res. without AA on and get nice smooth gameplay but for CS:S my Framerate goes anywhere from 18 to 60 but stays around 40 at best.

i think the 3850 would be my best bet.

What's ur budget? If it's around 100 USD then get a 4830 which will play counterstrike with all settings maxed. Out of those 2 it depends on ur mobo. If it's an agp get a 3850, if pci-e 4670 all the way.

why buy a 3850 really why even bother, the 4670 is overall a better move, heck a 4830 makes even more sense, performance wise I'd hate to say but a 3 series card won't even come close to dishing out the same performance as 4 series.

4670 > 3870
4830 is a detuned 4850
and you already know 4850 on its own is a sick card.
Lastly I would look into a processor upgrade, unless you want to hold out for deneb, or kuma.

hmm... could it be my CPU that is slowing down my GPU? i mean i planned on OC' the CPU to like 2.7GHZ but i could just get a new Mobo and CPU. my budget would be around close to $300

CPU could be affecting you on the whole, I have my athlon 64 clocked to 2.6, and still get some issues in games. in general a dual core would be a good move.

Mobo wouldn't be necessary to upgrade.

Correction Mobo might be a good idea. unless you want a skt 939 dual core and want regular ddr

That's a big number for an upgrade.

Sorry i streched it by 40 bucks. Now this is wayyyyyy overkill for playing CSS. But future proof for playing graphic intensive ones in later times.

An 8600GT should EASILY play CS maxed out. I had an 8500GT doing it lol...(on a c2d though)

The 4670 isnt better than an HD3850 though. (Pure performance wise) An 4670 is on par with the HD3850, even though most 4670's come overclocked (making them better).

The 4670 is definately the better choice (smaller, less power (doesnt need a power connector), better cooler) but performance wise they are almost the same.

yea 4670 does beat it out. treads on the heels of the 3870 in some games, not all but some. also carries the same amount of shaders or stream processors, just not a 256bit interface.

hmmm, its either spend about 110 for s939 dual core. also you can get 25% cash back on ebay for buy it now.
or drop about 160-180 for new mobo, proc, and RAM decisions decisions.

be they way, how much of a difference is that 256bit interface?

i plan on keeping my system as is. i just plan on upgrading the CPU and GPU. a member just messaged me saying he could see what he's got laying around for cheaper :)

be they way, how much of a difference is that 256bit interface?

Normally it leads to better performance with AA and higher resolutions, but in this case the HD4670 is too far superior for that to make enough difference.
