Well I do I would not want some thing running at 110c in my case that is high enough to melt the solder ! And plastic parts on the mobo .
And comparing a dual GPU to a single GPU is just moot , If it takes a dual GPU card to perform 10% better than a single GPU card then that speaks volumes to me . I care . and for the best BANG for the buck the GTX260 is the only way to go IMHO. I care that is why ! :slap:

110c is barely a third of how high the temperature needs to be to melt lead, and lead isn't always used in graphics cards. (327C melting point) Sometimes it's silver which has a much higher melting point, but inaccuracies aside...

Just because you made the decision to buy it and it was good enough for you doesn't mean it's good enough for everybody. I know you're defending your purchase...

What card performs better depends on the drivers. In all tests, some drivers are better than others. Other than choice of RAM, CPU, and motherboard, that's why you see differences between tests. I believe he should go ATI because it'll support more games and it's not going to EOL as fast as most Nvidia cards so he can expand when he wants to.

I keep getting contradicting arguments from everywhere on the net, (guess who wins in the end - the GFX card industry) goddamn, I hear the gx2 is crap for some games, then the 260 is better - I go on another google search and find that the gx2 way overpowers the 260 - then I go to another, then I find out that the 4870 beats both - then again the gx2 > 4870

I want to clear some statements from various posts.

I have GTX260 core 216, 2x HD 4850, plus 8800GTX
1. I love my GTX260 it is a nice buy if the games you play are optimized for Nvidia
2. HD 4850's are not hot. You just have to turn up the fans to 40-60% and it will run cool.
3. Nvidia cards do not go EOL any faster or slower. Take my 8800GTX, for 2 years it reigned supreme as one of the fastest video cards. 2 Years is a long time for GPUs.

4850, it's a dam beast. There is a 179 USD one after MIR on egg the i think. and 4850 is actually more then enough to play crysis maxed.

You are ON DRUGS! Did you even res he plays at? :wtf:

The GTX260 will drop in prices over the holidays. You'd see a difference with the 4850, but with the 192SC GTX260s at close to $200 USD I wouldn't DOWNGRADE for a 4850 to save $40.

You probably wouldn't forgive yourself if you did.

The GTX 260 (216) is generally faster than an HD 4870 512GB in almost any game or resolution. Its also as fast as an HD 4870 1GB in most situations, save for very high resolutions with max AA. At 1920x1200 you won't be disappointed. Generally speaking, it should have a higher minimum framerate in many games, even if it doesn't have the highest maximum framerate. And Crysis is a more Nvidia friendly title (all other things being equal - the HD 4870 X2 is an exception).

I had the same dillema you had... i got both the 4870 and gtx 260...

I RMA'd the 4870 because 1. it did not overclock well 2. It was hot 3. Drivers are not as good as NV, not bad, but not as good atm...

I kept the 260 192SP (and then got another one) because 1. overclocked like a banshee (25%+ basically on everything) and it spanked the 4870 at those settings... bad. When you OC 25%+ you get about 15-20% more performance, which is stock GTX 280 performance. 2. It ran really quiet. 3. it has more vram which is the difference between "medium" and "high" settings for games like GTAIV

I know you're defending your purchase....

I am simply informing the OP as well as I possibly can I am giving the OP all the information that I went through with the HD4850 I had and all the information I can about the GTX260 I have now . I am not defending my purchase I am doing more than that I am trying to prevent the OP from going through the same thing I went through ! Yeah that is what I want more heat being BLOWN into my case ! And at 110c that kind of heat would effectively raise all the temps CPU , RAM , mobo , PSU just what I want . pump that 110c into the case !
Sounds like you are defending ATI not the facts as I have .
Fact #1 the HD4850 I had took a crap after 2 weeks of use ! I GOT A RED screen and it locked up my computer not just once but 4 times . #2 You KNOW what you can not control the fan speed when you are reformatting the HDD as I had to do because of the RED screen of death I got the 4th time it corrupted windows and the boot file as well . Once I was reloading windows I got a full on pink screen with the format of HDD at 80% the system again locked up ! So your saying that this is fine ? that this was just a fluke card ? why should any one els have to experience this ? I had to put in my 8800GT just to get my computer back up and running , Then I took the HD4850 back and well it was the smartest thing I ever done . The fact that crysis could not even run at high settings with out looking like a slide show with the HD4850 was some thing that really pissed me off , What with all the talk about how sweet they are and all and it could not even run warhead on gamer with out it looking like a slide show , What with all the talk about the HD4850 being a sweet card and all , Now I have the GTX260 and I do not have a HEAT issue ( No Over heating at all !! ) I can play Crysis and Crysis warhead on the highest settings the game offers with out a stutter , glitch or it looking like a SLIDE SHOW ! Perfection is what I see smooth and flawless operation at very high and Enthusiast settings !
Now with this being said I say that the OP should get the GTX260 because of the very issues I had with the HD4850 , why am I compairing the HD4850 to the HD4870 you might ask ? as a consumer I do not like to have to take things back have my computer shut down and need to be reformatted as a consumer I do not like to see things like this happening to my stuff so word of mouth and the word is ATI is a head ache and a waste of time IMHO .
Since I have installed the GTX260 I have not had any problems at all with my computer rock solid and stable ! No heat issues no red or pink screens nothing at all but the very best gaming experience I have ever HAD ! SO YES I WILL NOT ONLY DEFEND my purchase I will also by word of mouth spread the word ! That is what we as consumers do ! :toast:

Okay guys, thanks all for input

I stand at this decision

either the 4870, the GTX 260, or the 9800 GX 2

-----------

I can get the 4870 for $300

I can get the GTX 260 for $300

and I found a used GX2 for $225

------------------

If I had to make an educated choice based on one of these three purchases I'd ignore the GX2 because I'm not a fan of second hand stuff, unless I was 100% sure of the quality and could get a refund it was faulty.

The 4870 and GTX 260 are the same price but the 4870 would outperform it in the majority of benchmarks, in some benchmarks the 4870 can out run a GTX 280.

If money is a concern you could purchase an 4850 or 9800 GTX+, they are only slightly slower than the 4870 and 260 GTX and are a lot cheaper.

Ignore tales from people that bash either Nvidia or ATI I've owned both brands in the past decade and I've had issues with both brands and the faults were easily resolvable.

What did you not see the GTX for $199.00 ? that is $100.00 bucks less than what you can get the 4870 for (as you have it listed ) any way the 4870 only beats the GTX260 if you have the 1GB ram version other than that the 4870 is out performed by the GTX260 .
Not bashing any one just stating FACTS you need to get that straight .

No I did not see the GTX for $199 otherwise I would of quoted it, I saw the GTX and 4870 for $300, hence why quoted it :)

If the GTX is $199 then that is a bargain.

haha guys, I reasearched all night (thats what I tried not to do - why I posted here, but advice was too confusing.

The 260 GTX 216 pwns the shit out of the 4870 1GB on the highest resolutions on almost every game except for GRID, and im talking about normal testing methods, not some rigged stuff. you want to say it is better, go ahead find some benchies :D

I don't know why you guys even suggested the 4850 for me, becaue it is a crap card and it is much better to get a 260.

As for the GX2, it has minimum fps problems, and it is a dual gpu whereas the 260 is a single gpu

the 260 is also better for overclocking, plus it is 1st gen hardware

the 260 is the best!

if not then care to try to prove me wrong with proof

(and no I am not going to buy a 4870 x2 because it is $550 in canada - and yes I know it is better)

Well I have been saying all along the GTX260 is far better and you would be happy with it . Now I hope I have not confused you I mainly have been trying to tell you about my experience with the HD4850 ATI card and the MSI GTX260 card is all and that going from the ATI card to the beloved Nvidia card was the best thing I could have ever done !
The GTX260 is not even Nvidias top card and it HOLDS it's OWN against ATI's top card ( single GPU that is ) ! That has to tell you some thing now !
Any way I would get the GTX 260 and be done with it then later on get a second one and SLI it ! Can't beat that no matter what ATI card you have !

I don't know why you guys even suggested the 4850 for me, becaue it is a crap card and it is much better to get a 260.
The 4850 isn't a crap card, it's a respectable high-mid range entry. In the UK the 4850 is approximately £118 and the GTX 260 is about £215, huge price gap for a few extra frames. Even in the US market the GTX 260 is typically around $240 without promotions and the 4850 is around $160. huge price gap for a few extra frames?
My feeling is that people suggested the 4850 or 9800 GTX because price/performance they work out better value, plus your Athlon X2 3200+ might be a bottleneck for a ultra high end card?
Either way The GTX 260 is a great card, if you can afford it and can justify the cost for an extra few FPS you'll be happy, it can easily run any game maxed out.

now where the hell do you get that the 4870 1gb beats the 260 216 gtx at high resolutions?

do you guys just come up with this stuff? or is it like a 1 person just blurts it out, and then the next person believes it, and it spreads like that?

NOT me I know that is some areas the 4870 1GB beats the GTX260 but it is a close match and only marginally beats the GTX 260 at best not a shout out or blown away like the ATI fanboys would like to make it sound !
IMHO there is no ATI card that could do what this ONE GTX260 has done for me and that is the WOW factor I am WOWED !

im getting an i7 or a q6600 - dam there will be minimal bottle neck, and I already have 4gb of ddr2 800 which I will obviously OC

some, but the 260 beats it most of the times, and the 4870 is GDDR5, and it cant even beat GDDR3

ATI fails for now, but it will probably conquor Nvidia in due course

Extra FRAMES ? are you daft ?
I could NOT run CRYSIS OH high nor could I run Warhead on gamer with that POS HD4850 NOT to mention the problems with heat lockups and red and pink screens OF DEATH !
With the GTX260 I can HONESTLY say I am WOWED ! I CAN set Crysis to VERY HIGH and warhead to Enthusiast and it PLOW'S right through with out it looking like a slide show ! So do not come on here telling me that the HD4850 is a comparable card to the GTX260 when I KNOW FOR A FACT IT CAN NOT EVEN HOLD A CANDLES LIGHT TO THE GTX260 !

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
I think this sums it up nicely:

"Cranking it up some more from the base 576MHz/1,242/1,998MHz clocks, we managed really push the card to decent levels, topping out at 704MHz core/1,414MHz shaders/2,450MHz memory. Seeing this, we wonder if the same base binning is used on EXO samples, too.

Looking back at the ET:QW test at 1,920x1,200 we see that card, at its shipping clocks, scored an average 75.93fps. When overclocked this rose to an impressive 89.7 fps when overclocked, which is the kind of benchmark result a Radeon HD 4850 X2 returns."
