Recording games software (best)

Can some one direct me to some software for recording games. Preferably free but dosent have to be.

My daughter gets into this and then editing them. Mostly runescape lol
I have the editing software that she uses, but I need something to record the games.

She uses Cantasia. I heard of fraps and hyper is there any others or what is best.

Because me and her are going to have a showdown. :laugh:

She's going to whip my ass but I want to be able to compete with her.

Camtasia is really for recording 2D windows (and creating demos). IIRC it's not thebest solution for 3D and DirectX. FRAPS is very popular.

HOWEVER, some games have internal recording abilities. It does record video, it records the "game movements". You then need the game to play back the script. This is how game-demo-benchmarks work. What's very nice about this, is that if you have the right tool, you can view the action FROM ANY ANGLE... which is really neat. You can then make a video from your "directors chair" of what you think the best angle is for viewing the action.

I dont know about options are available for runescape. You may be stuck the the players viewpoint and recording live. Note that recoding live will significantly hammer your framespersecond.

I'd say fraps was the best for taking vids although you have to buy it to get more than 30 seconds footage. Also if you have a quad core and a second HDD it stops it from lagging when taking the video.

With your E8500 upto 4Ghz, provided the system is stable and in combination of the 4870's in crossfire, you shouldnt have too much of a problem with the loss of resources.

Fraps is deff my choise, and ive been using it for years. Yes you are able to merge and edit the footage using appropriate software. I am currently using Adobe Premier Elements CS4, and am enjoying the GPU doing most of the workload leaving my CPU for other duties.

Please keep inmind that the total filesize of the recorded RAW footage can become very extensive and the framerate your recording at is relevant. For example, 20 minutes @ 29.99 frames a second would give you about 5 x 4.4Gb part = 20Gb or so. Whereas 20 minutes @ 100 frames a second would five you about 15+ x 4.4Gb parts = a shitload of space.

I usually fraps at 170 frames a second and end up with a stupidly excessive filesize when i merge the parts, but when i encode it everything ends up about 300mb for decent enough quality. The process sucks but its what i do

If you set fraps to use only one core, and save the video to a different HDD it doesn't lag much at all.

Maybe CamStudio? It's free but I'm not 100% certain it will work with full screen apps.

Fraps works very well if you got the ram and cpu power, a separate HDD also helps a bit.
