Haha... bet you didnt think you would hear this one from me.

Why dont they make graphics cards with the gpu on the other side?

at least some of them ya know?

heat rises right? so on say silent/fanless gpu's why dont they make the card with the mem and core on top. that way heat will rise into the heatpipe faster and easier.

i believe asus was the only one who tried this and it failed only because no one adopted the idea.

i can foresee a few other problems but other than that, what do you guys think?

This has come up before in other threads, I do agree with you, but a few members brought up the good arguements of clearance issues with CPU coolers, North Bridge cooling, ventilation, motherboard layouts, etc.

If a newer standard was made to allow for a 2-3 slot clearance above the GPU slot, it might be a good way to go about it really...I don't know how much cooler the GPU's would really run, I guess it would depend on the effectiveness of the cooling, cheaper cooling would probably benefit the most...I don't think it'd help or hinder the performance of higher end air cooling solutions.

Get a Lian Li V1000 with the reverse ATX setup. I love looking at my card right-side up.

yeah. the cold air would just about fall into the fan on most cards. they could start at the bottom of the board and possibly fit another slot in between them so they could really breath if they were 2 slot beasts.

lol... im fitseries3... i had one of them over a year ago. i liked it but it had bad airflow and deadspace in it. i know you can fix it but its just odd. i always wanted to flip my TJ07 over but never got around to doing it as i lost interest in the case.

hahahahahah~!

i love that case but idk. i sooo over cases.

the way i see it a case is a waste when your like me. thats $200+ on something that holds my computer and makes it difficult to change parts and move things around. i'd rather spend the money elsewhere.

Ah man just wait for the kid who now goes and cuts his video card up

Edit: Or are you talking about cutting into a case?

its because warm air rises, so they orient it so that the fan will suck cooler air from lower in the case [i dont know for real but thats all i got]

I think dell has it own ATX setup where all the cards face gpu side up.

I'm pretty sure they use BTX motherboards, which are designed to be on the other side of the PC case and hence have the card fans facing up.
I'm not particularly worried about hot air rising, whats their heating the air in the first place? I don't know about some people, but in most cases the only component that is under the graphics card heating up air is the southbridge, a second gcard, or some kind of Monster Sound Card...
Cold air falls, so any cold air will circulate to the bottom of the PC case, GPU will suck it up, and it will be cool.

EDIT: lol, fits beat me to it. I have more info though. :p

that makes sense to me

Edit: Looking at newegg BTX didn't really catch on either, they don't carry any Intel or AMD BTX mobos

The PCB acts as a heatspreader...which is why its on the top.

I'd say the main reason cards are mounted the way they are (with fans and heat sinks facing down) so to prevent dust from clogging it up.

Dust clogs them up no matter what. My ATI X850XT always needs a good cleaning after a few months.

I have yet to clean a single graphics card and only had to replace one out of warranty HSF that failed. There are really only two reasons why a card would need to be cleaned when mounted upside down:
1) The slits of the heatsink are too close together causing dust particles to get caught and thus, build up into a large mass over time.
2) The heatsink itself has become attractive to dust (static electricity) because it isn't properly grounded.

The top of the card can still get dust on it but, unless you are overclocking, it is not critical to keep it free of dust.

heat rises right? so on say silent/fanless gpu's why dont they make the card with the mem and core on top. that way heat will rise into the heatpipe faster and easier.

There are three modes of heat transfer, convection, conduction and radiation. The only time you will see heat rise is when convection is occuring in a fluid (gas or liquid). Conduction and radiation are simply driven by heat difference, i.e. heat flows from hot to cold.

For a modern graphics card, conduction and radiation are the main modes of heat transfer.
In addition, if your case any fans, the turbulence associated with their flow will virtually drown out any convective flow within the case as well. You can try this out by measuring temp in your case, hot spots are either a) where the heat is being generated or b) where the fans blow the heat.
