Anyone else notice..

Valve games have 2x better graphics in trailers and gameplay videos but when I play them they look different and not as shiny.. The only ones that did this are Half-Life 2 Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead. The trailers showed much better graphics than the final product and more/better motion blur.

Most game companies do it and have been doing so for years. Heck, I remember the days of being fooled by magazine ads that had amazing art and got a game that looked like a bunch of different colored blocks. Then again, that's why you should never base your decisions on advertisements.

It's called supercomputer rendering. However it's not so bad now because pcs are becoming incredibly powerful and can produce very good quality graphics on it's own anyway.

Compare animated films (which are rendered on server farms) like Shrek, Cars, Kung Fu Panda, etc. to games like Crysis (which are rendered in realtime on PCs). The difference in detail and quality should be abundantly clear.

The worst to me is the magazines. Whenever they show pics or the 'in-game' footage, its always on insane workstations, which greatly curves how they look. Doom 3 really annoyed me, and since then I haven't taken anything for a grain of salt until a video from a 3rd party shows up. That will then really show you how it looks

films like this can be rendered on a 7900GS. Unlike the video games, these movies dont have to be rendered on the spot. Instead it is rendered frame by frame and compiled into a movie (which takes a very long time for each compilation). These graphics couldnt be rendered by anything known to man in real-time, and actually takes CPU power, not GPU power, upon compilation.

Ive had the opposite take, it seems like my games look better than the trailers, or maybe im just watching lo-def trailers.

meh, doesn't really matter if the graphics look better in the trailer, if you play your game for graphics well then that just gives the devs a more reason to make a cruddier game. quit arguing graphics and let it go...besides most of that stuff is touched up anyways to make it look better because of the requirements of the magazine. trailers will do that do to heavy video edited, and dude to the fact they get more time to kick those out then actually deving the game.

Yeah flashlights attached. Good scripting, good enemy behavior, full on physics engine. More enemies and sooner, excellent music. That's what I was wanting, but instead, I got a game with very little variety, predictable enemies, terrible scripting, bad music, and they resorted to scares by not allowing you to use a flashlight and gun at the same time.
