Athlon X2 7750 or Phenom 9850 BE

I have purchased both an Athlon X2 7750 BE and a Phenom 9850 BE in the last couple of weeks. I'm waiting on the Phenom since it was purchased yesterday, but basically I plan on keeping one and passing the other one to my brother for his build. Generally, I'm happy with the general performance of any CPU these days, but I'm more concerned about which would be best for gaming. I know the 7750 uses a Phenom core now, but will performance in games be similar? Either one will be used in a 790GX board. Also, I plan on overclocking as much as I can. So overall, which will provide the most performance for my gaming needs?

Well i suggest u stretch a bit further for 940 BE. Because 920 has locked multi, makes it a bit harder to oc.

If you go AMD, you pretty much need to go Phenom II as of now, they do give the Core 2's a run for there money.

And AFAIK 9850 BE's weren't that good at clocking. So look into 940 BE's, they OC 4GHz air!

What games do you play? If the games don't take more than 2 core advantage then 7750 for now and later get PII or PII AM3 if supported.

I did that mistake when buying the 9850 BE. Don't do that.

Odds are he's looking to the 7750 or 9850 because cash flow reasons. It would be a stretch to the PII 920, but not really that far, but to stretch beyond that to the 940 that is almost $100 more than a 9850. Thats a large amount, I would only make one leap, because from there you could say, well you can jump one more up to the Q9550 and from there just a jump to the i7 920 or Q9650.

So I say just make one leap, get the 920, people are hitting 3.6Ghz with air no problem with them it seems and maybe you could squeeze 3.7 or 3.8 out of it if you tried.

Well I'm currently using the 7750 BE which I bought for $65. The 9850 BE was just purchased yesterday for $95. As I mentioned earlier, I'm selling my nForce 750a board to my brother and just couldn't decide if I should keep the Athlon or the Phenom. Sounds like the 7750 would be the better option to keep though until Phenom 2 comes down in price.

Thanks for your input thus far but feel free to keep on adding your thoughts since it will be at least a month before I make my final decision.

Either way you go it's a fine decision though I would go with the 9850BE from personal experience.

All this absolutely nonsense about the 920 being hard to clock is just that....nonsense. The locked multiplier is NOT going to hurt you as these chips clock very well so either way you'll get a high clock. Look at the results for the 920 from the owners of the chip and don't go on hearsay as you'll end up possibly making a bad decision skipping it. The 940 is great but it truly sounds as though you have no nead for it at all.

Every processor you've mentioned in your choice I either have or still own, and they're all very good choices.

The 9850BE is more flexible than the 7750 so I'd go with that over the 7750BE. Like I said they're all excellent so either way you go is a good decision.

Sorry if that sounded 'rantish', but I've grown tired of hearing nonsense spouted about without having actual experience. I know I shouldn't let it get to me, but sometimes it get's annoying especially when you see it spouted by the same people at multiple forums. :shadedshu

Yep, the PII 920 is a great processor, the only time your going to see a massive gain over it by the 940 is when you have good enough cooling to bump up the multi and fsb. And thats what you are gonna be doing after 4Ghz, but most people don't have the cooling or what to run the volts required to do this 24/7.

Anyways, since you got both those procs keep the 9850, I had no troube hitting 3.0 ghz on stock voltages with mine. After that it gets hairy, but 3.0 is fine.

I would stick with the 9850... its a quad core so its more future proof. the 7750 is built off of the old phenom architecture, with slight enhancements, but nothing to outdo a quad

since you already ordered it - out of the two definitely the 9850

i have run both- running the 9850 now- someone posted you could do the phenom II 920 for less- id do that
