Hey guys and gals!

Well, thing is I've been thinking of for a while on having the Dell 24" UltraSharp Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor for my new monitor for my new rig like, and I'm starting to contemplate on it, but I'm unsure. I don't know if there is better out there for gaming, in the region of 22"-24" and for pricing.

I was thinking if there where better monitors than this for gaming, what are they? What prices would I be looking at?

In general I was wondering if you lot could post some information for me on monitors if you don't mind, makes, models, resolution, etc. That way I can possibly choose a better monitor for myself for gaming than this one if there are any and possibly at a lower price too :)

Thanks in advance!

Well sir, what you got there is a PVA panel. This type of panel is generally considered middle of the road in terms of quality, with IPS making up the high end and TN making up the low. (This is the technology used in the display itself). IPS panels are sought after by professionals looking for accurate color reproduction for when they are doing photo shopping or other graphical art. TN panels are considered the best for gaming, as they aren't the best in color reproduction, but they boast the lowest response times at 2ms. Also, they usually have low input lag. If you play alot of first person shooters and you feel that it absolutely matters, I had some Viewsonic TN Panels (VX922s) that were pretty good for color and had the benefits of the TN.

However, I've also seen the 2408WFP (yours) talked about in high regard on the matter of games. I think you're pretty set with yours as is, the only thing being it has a relatively high input lag. Input lag doesn't really matter though unless you're fighting Fatality and you have skills equal to his (and really need to get that headshot first). Or if you're playing RTS games and really need that High APM (attacks per minute).

Some sources of handy information for you:

This site has a fairly comprehensive selection of monitors, including your current one. Also, they really, REALLY test these monitors.

This site has only 24 inch displays on it, but again has some great reviews.

Thanks for the input guys!

Will read up about the links provided and really appreciate the information given :)

@El Fiendo: Really nice and informative fella, although I'm not a highly skilled FPS'er lol, I'm more mediocre at best hahaha! No idea who Fatality is but I'm guessing he/she is one of the few instant-reaction time players hehe!

I do play RTS and FPS games, but nothing like I used to, I do play CS: Source now and again which is not often, mainly playing the storyline recently from Crysis, I play C&C Tiberium Wars, don't play it online though, I'm more of the storyline/skirmish player, as my skills to play against online players is not even worth mentioning haha! Mainly play the likes of World of WarCraft but I do play alsorts of games if you check out my Xfire profile... One thing is I never actually had Xfire running with a lot of my games, so it's not got my full list of games hehe :D

For the high input lag you mentioned, it's 6ms response time right? 2ms faster than the one I am using currently and I've never had a problem with this one, just 17" is seeming rather small now :( -- Can people actually notice the difference from 2ms-8ms? As that is pretty fast lol :rockout:

6ms is essentially the refresh rate (using CRT terms) or how fast the color can go from one to another. This monitor is very good, but if you move the mouse fast from side to side really fast, you will notice 'ghosting' of the cursor across the screen. This is what is denoted mainly by response time. TN panels, with a 2ms response time will have less of this, but honestly I've never had an issue with it. Its one of those things you see if you're intentionally looking for it.

As for input lag, this is say, you move your mouse to click on something but the mouse isn't actually where you are percieving it on screen, its actually a little ahead of where the image shows because of the input lag. This is extremely finite as well and most people never notice it. I never gave an input lag for this monitor but on TFT Central they show it being 64ms. Again, only people like Fatality (world champion gamer quality type guy) would notice this as they are doing the quick aiming shooting and moving more.

Edit: I'm a noob. I read it as you owned the 2408. Hurr durr lol sorry. Most of my info doesn't change, my responses to you will just seem a little off when I talk about the 2408WFP.

I've never had an issue with the ghosting how you describe, I don't think I've ever seen it, considering the monitor I use and the mouse (Razor Copperhead Tempest Blue 2000dpi setting :rockout:) -- That could mainly be because I've never tried looking for it hehe!

As for input lag, this is say, you move your mouse to click on something but the mouse isn't actually where you are percieving it on screen, its actually a little ahead of where the image shows because of the input lag. Nah, have to say I've never noticed this either, most of the time I'm taking my time, gaming I either hit or miss, I'm too laid back to care half the time lol, if it looks like a hit and I got popped first, just have to take and retry lol, that's my idea anyway :D

So I'm not sure that will be a major factory in me either, as most of the games are mainly keyboard input from keybindings from the keyboard and mouse, but I know that the 2408WFP we're talking about is far superior to the one I'm currently using hehe!

Edit: I'm a noob. I read it as you owned the 2408. Hurr durr lol sorry. Most of my info doesn't change, my responses to you will just seem a little off when I talk about the 2408WFP.

Nah fella, you're no noob :) -- So hush!

Hehe, easily done to misinterpret things, skim reading is done a lot even when you're concentrating (at least with me sometimes hehe) so it's not like there's any harm done is there? :)

What do you mean by a little off when you talk about the 2408WFP though, I'm not sure I'm getting you there? I really appreciate the information you're contributing for me too fella, it's putting more insight for me as a while back a monitor was a monitor to me haha! :toast:

Ah, just in my first post it was written sounding like you owned the 2408. Nothing major. But yea as far as it seems, get something that you think looks sexy and just make sure it isn't absolutely flamed on one of those 2 sites. If you're thinking about watching movies, PVA and IPS panels are more your thing, but they are more expensive. Pricing goes TN, PVA then IPS. IPS cheapest is around 700USD so its really not worth it if its not even what you need for usage. If you want something that will cover both gaming and play a decent movie, then do the PVA. Other that any TN panel (most are TN) will do.

Okidoki fella, thanks for the help and from what I've gained here I think I'll stick to this monitor :)

Like the review on it and I really love the looks of it too, I've seen a good mate play on the Battlefield series using one of these and seen him play movies on it too with a milder rig than the one I currently have which ran sweet! As for watching my dvds and what not, I'll most likely still stick to my 32" LG HD TV hehe :rockout:

I'm still going to give those sites a proper read through though as it'll broaden my knowledge to other brands too and what not! Though ultimately I think I will stick to the 2408WFP :)

So again, I thank you a lot for the help and time you contributed, that's not including the information you provided! As the information on it's own is gratifying :) -- Thanks for the link provided too, n-ster! Really appreciate it :)

I would really recommend the one I linked above... from 17" to 22" will be a nice upgrade... and 1920x1080 res is pretty nice too...

also, if you have ps3 or 360, you can play on it at 1080p since there is a hdmi port!

I would suggest upgrading... just advice from a learning noob to another :p

EDIT: NEVERMIND! didn't see your in England... lemme see if that screen is cheap over there too! and since your not so much in gaming... I think it's a waste of money to spend so much

EDIT2:like what... 300 pounds less?

EDIT3: is this a 28" I see for 100 pounds less then yours?

17" to a 22" upgrade is absolutely great upgrade hehe, can't wait to get it, I'm like 50/50 on getting monitor next or the 2x XFX 9800GX2's lol! :O

As for res, I can't wait to go higher than 1280x1024 which I'm currently at! :)

No PS3, but I have the following; Atari, Sega Megadrive, Playstation, Playstation 2, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, PC and Xbox360... :rockout: -- Got a 32" LG HD tv so got the Xbox360 on that hehe :D

Although the upgrade is definitely being done, and loving the last line, well put hehe!:toast:

Haha, easily done fella! :) -- As for gaming I am into it a lot, just I space my time out doing it as I like to do physical activities more, although I spend a lot of time on the PC mon-fri from when I get home from work as I work 2pm-10pm so normally up late on the PC then :D -- I know what you mean about spending a lot though, although I want this PC to be a monster and I pretty much want a good standard for the rig as I know it will last a while albeit I have new rigs and ideas floating in my head for the future, Sol knows this from my previous rig lol, before I had all the parts for my last rig, I was planning the rig I have now he was like :wtf: lmao haha!

Looks snazzy hehe, I'm going to compare the reviews on this one to the Dell 2408WFP monitor and see/compare which would be more beneficial for me to buy, albeit this is far cheaper, but it's whether it'll be worth the price drop if you get me :D -- Though I do like the looks of it without a doubt! :)

Personally from my sitting area and how my room is, I think to view that kind of screen so close would do my head and eyes in, so that's out of the equation lol, 28" is faaaaaar too big for my liking lol! I think 24" is pushing it because 22" is quite large enough as it is :D

Thanks again for the help mate and I'm gonna review the link El Fiendo posted for the monitor reviews and compare this to the 2408WFP, as I'm really taking a liking to that ASUS 22" monitor you linked :D

the best thign to do is find a panel with a good spec and google for a review

samsung and dell are popular there are a few assorted benQ and others that are decent but its hit and miss

i would get a 5ms and a 22 or a 24 inch 1920x1080 res
higher contrast the better i cant recommend any exact monitors but ebuyer is okay to look at

Cheers dude, although I'll be getting my mate who owns his own workshop about 5mins walk from me to order my stuff, including the monitor I'll be getting :)

So far I am more keen on the Dell 2408WFP monitor, 6ms, 24" for 1920x1080 res and a lot of features to take the lift off the rig, for instance I could unplug some of the USB 2.0 components like the webcam and plug it in and take it out when I please if I have the Dell 2408WFP monitor instead of having it constantly hooked up to the rig, and I can do the same with my Saitek Cyborg evo joystick hehe XD (although that's not plugged in lol)

Thanks for the input too though fella, every contribution is appreciated no matter how big or small the contribution, help is help and to receive it, it's kind of a blessing in todays generation so to speak :D (that's not putting TPU in with todays generation though as everyone here is one of a kind and always helpful ;))

An absolutely awesome post

What an informative post! :toast:

If you wish to buy a good monitor, Samsungs tend to do good displays and they will be cheaper than that dell in your first post.

I have been suggested that by the mate who owns his own workshop 5mins walk away from me, do Samsungs do something similar to the dell I mentioned? Like the USB 2.0 ports in particular as that would be a nice asset to have! :)

So long as it's 22"-24" great monitor, good resolution (prefereably able to handle 1920x1080), 8ms or less response time then the price isn't an issue I was thinking around anything upto £400 although less is better in most of the cases hehe, means it wont take as long to save up for the rest of the kit :D

I have friends with the ASUS, and they were astounded by it... they thanked me so much for showing them that monitor... it was funny really :p

yea its SOOOOOOOOOOOO much cheaper, looks good, not only visually, but on paper too ( 2ms response (event though its GTG, which is ~4 ms black white black) 1920x1080 etc...) and my friends said they were worried about color/brightness stats (because they were comparing this monitor to some 600$ one) but they told the the brightness is CRAZY good and color very EXTREMELY nice... another thing, they are PROS with computers, but especially monitors... that's y they took me very lightly at first :p

I can't stretch how good this monitors is according to my friends... they didn't even THINK of buying something at 6ms black white black or higher...

anyways, I can tell you I'm sold to this monitor... as for reviews, I'll look at some later if I have time, because right now i gtg study :(

PLEASE DON'T SPEND 450 pound on a screen... PLEASE! think of all the ppl from underdeveloped countries dying and starving... give the extra pounds to them if you want! :p

6ms is okay just try and remember some manufacturers fudge the spec like they make the contrast bigger when its only that dynamic stuff and they fudge the response time call it 2mn when it is really 5ms or more than often 8ms

5ms and 6ms seems more realistic numbers

Thanks for the additional input guys, really appreciate it :)

Also, when you mentioned the dynamic stuff Kieran, did you mean the Dynamic Contrast? If so should I look at Contrast Ratio over Dynamic Contrast Ratio?

I think that's what I read on a review and if I'm right the Dynamic Contrast Ratio is higher than the Contrast Ratio, but anything from 3000:1 and above is good right? Never known much about the Contrast Ratios and what's good/average/brilliant, etc... :D

EDIT: Good luck with studying too n-ster!

yea... samsung tends to put everything in dynamic contrast and it LOOKS so awesome... watch out about that... but as for the contrast ratio (non dynamic) that's good, usually 1000:1 is more than enough...

oh just one thing for the asus... DON'T USE THE SPEAKERS! they suck :p

Cheers matey, will consider that, looking at the review you linked now too :)

I have read some of the reviews... but keep in mind, newegg shipping SUCKS, and i believe that is the reason some ppl say there's a bit of bleeding (which btw is only noticeable when its almost black screen)

Ahh -- I'll not really be buying from there unless I need to like lol, as I can get pretty much most things from the mate I know as he can get practically most things, he's a retailer for Gigabyte and Samsung so I can get ahold of those products no problem, rest of it is quite easy for him to get so long as it shows up on his suppliers stock list :)

What's this bleeding you speak about though matey?

let us know what you get

monitor speakers are good for normal use but music and gaming sucks, sound effects on windows and light use is okay

dynamic contract is okay on later models on mine it dosnt switch fast enuf, deep blacks one minute bright colours the next but looking at shadows then a bright sun it takes a while to change so it sucks

normal contrast should be 1000:1 or higher, brightness 500 or more

dynamic sometimes can make a monitor seems cool but 20,000:1 is a lie it wont be anywhere near that

change the settings a bit to get it perfect
i have the samsung 225lw its okay not perfect but it was the best thing i could get for the price

Certainly will do fella, I'm still more towards the Dell 2408WFP being honest, as it has a lot to offer for me :D -- Weel suggested I go for the 3007 Dell monitor, I'll take a look but I doubt I'll go for it because it's a little too big for my liking with my viewing area and it's a bit too close for me to be looking at all that space if you catch my drift? :)

As for monitor speakers, I never use them, I stick to the ones I have now with are Creative Inspire 5.1 P5800 but I'll be getting some juicy Z-5500 for the rig I have now, can't wait to save up and purchase them bad boys lol :D
