CPU upgrade, what should i get? (AMD)

My brother has been thinking about upgrading his CPU for a while now, but is not sure what to get. Basically its gotta be cheap, not high in watts, and does give a boost in performance over his current CPU. Its also gotta be a X2 he doesnt want anything else with more cores, and he does not overclock.

His current CPU is a X2 4800 2.5GHz, with 2GB of 800MHz Corsair RAM (cant remember the timings) and a ATI 4850 512MB video card.

I was looking at the new line of X2's the 7XXX series and thought maybe one of these could be good enough for him, and give a noticable performance increase? and with everything else he wants ^

His motherboard is a > GA-MA770-DS3

lol yea i wish my bro would get one of those, but i cant see it, shame, and there not realy cheap over here, selling for over $400 for the 940, so yea not going to happen

Is his 4800+ an AM2 or a 939? If its an AM2 he won't see any increase in performance unless he goes to something with more cores. There is no real difference performance wise. THe main differences will be a bigger cache, which could help, and a lower TDP (my guess is they are 90w, so your saving about 35W)

The given mobo indicates that it is AM2+ and the chip is 770.So no real performance increase.
PS.It has DDR2 too.So we can't see a worthy CPU upgrade for that.Besides it can hold up many games IMHO.

If he doesnt OC, then the fastest chip he can get and not a quad core is the Athlon 64 x2 6400. It runs at 3.2Ghz, is 125watts and runs really hot. Basically this is the end of the Athlon X2 line. So the 4800 runs 2.5Ghz...you get a 700Mhz increase and an extra 1Mb of cache all for $90. It will perform some what better...won't be awe inspiring or anything, but for sure a good 5FPS or so faster in most games.

It is a X2 4800+ AM2+ CPU/Mobo so he can run just about any Proc he wants. I was thinking and looking and yea with the more cache he should get a boost in performance as well with higher clock speeds. I wish he would get a triple core at least but he is a very picky person, even tho he is made out of money =/ His current CPU is at 65w i think, so im trying to get something close to that.

Yea i was looking at the X2 6400+, i have put one in a comp i built before and it performed very well, but yea at 125W he just wouldnt wont to know about it :shadedshu This is why i was looking at the new line of X2's the 7750+ or above series as they run close to or just abit over the X2 6000+ in performance and they are at 95W.

Well really if he wants to stay in the X2 arena I would say 6400+ does it have to be an AMD? I'm assuming it does due to the fact that he would have to get a new motherboard. If he were to get a quad core a Phenom II 940 would serve him well, but if he is a huge penny pincher a 9600,9850,9950 would also be a good choice.

The 7750 BE is a fast dual core and he will see some gains with that. IF you can wait for the 7850 Id say go for it. If not, snatch up the 7750. X2 is far from dead.

Well i think he doesnt want to spend much, even tho he can afford anything easy as, and i mean anything, but i told him that the 7750 was close to the price of the 6000 and he thought that wasnt to bad, and there around the $140 mark.

Sorry i meant to add its a $140 Australian money, not American.

Ive bought a 9950BE before over here for a comp i built, great CPU it cost just over $300 here.

So yea we are expensive when it comes to that =/

not completely true. The 7750BE runs about as fast as a 6000+ when both are stock.I would recommend the 7750BE great chip a good clocker too
