its an intel Celeron mATX system, old drives were fried so i got a new 150GB E-IDE drive and it does everything smooth until i get to the disk partitioning part in setup, and it says OS doesn't detect a hard drive so i can't partition it and install it :(

i've tried this on windows ME, windows XP 64, Ubuntu 8.10 (burned and official live CD) heck i even tried vista! they all do the same, so i tried switched the HDD IDE cable to the Optical drive IDE port and vise versa...any idea's?

Secondary master is recommended. Try a DOS based partition manager and format through that first.

EDIT:

I beleieve there is one on Sol's DVD 3.0 (check link in sig). If not there is Ranish on Ultimate Boot CD http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

make sure (if any) the jumpers are set to auto or correspond to the settings you establish in the bios. (directions for setting your jumpers are usually listed on the device itself). If both devices are on the same IDE ribbon, then the settings should be primary master HDD/Primary slave ODD. This shouldn't be an issue of your motherboard recognizing the full quantity of data. Also, I'm assuming the power cables are properly plugged in to each device?

question: should i set up an encrypted private directory on my system? Ubuntu is prompting me to create one....

HP shipped them with 80GB IDE's and it worked before the drive fried.

Must be a newer celly rig, I had an old OLD celeron rig that wouldn't see more than 32GB.

My apologies, I assumed you had them both running on a single cable.

You can use multiple cables, you just need to set them up differently in the bios. It is also possible that the cable was bad.

If the hdd and optics are detected in bios no need of changing jumpers. You all know I guess that XP need SATA drivers to be inserted via flopy when instaling on mobo with sata disk and via or sis mobo chipset. And for intels mobo and SATA combination does not need fdd drivers to be provided.
Well there are mobos with intel chipset that are use another chip for ide controlers that need drivers to be supplied just like instaling winxp with sata drive on mobo with via chipset. Meaning you need to find what controler is that download drivers to flopy and when winxp install starts press F6 so you later on could point to correct driver from flopy.
