I was looking for good 120mm case fans , with thermal sensor on wire .

Finally select , GELID SILENT 12 TC . ;) two of them :D

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320334598114

As soon they come , i will make a local review .

I have two Akasa with LED , but half LEDs had burn out,
so time to upgrade , with better - modern - auto controlled ones . :toast:

Has any one else have them, to share his impressions ? :)

I got impressed , by the thermo sensor , that has good temps range 20-40C

Thanks friend .. :)

The magic in those fans are, that they are advertised as Silent with good reasons.

Designed for discerning Silent enthusiasts GELID Silent TC fans provide additional airflow by changing the fan speed according to your actual temperature needs, giving you no more noise than absolutely necessary and maximum cooling when needed.

Technically : they use modern bearings
Hydro Dynamic Bearing

In praxis , i have two AKASA 120mm with equal CFM rating .

If this fans , act as they claim .... they will be winners .

This review of my , will be more as a direct comparison .
I do not care about brands and labels , the best one will be seen in action.

Ok the judgment day are today ..

So one small intro ... DC motors are well known to me, servicing electronics makes my living.
By building electronic circuits on demand , i have open many holes for fans so far , with my hole saw tool.

GELID is a very new brand, and the illustration and promotion of there products , looks under my microscope, very honest .

They said ... accurate fins design ... well it is ... exactly the same as the AKASA ones. ;)

They said ... Low noise ... it is .

They said ... 58 CMF ... Nop its not .

They said ... Better bearings .... Hmmm time will tell .

The DC motor on the scope .
The GELID motor was a pleasant surprise to me .
Usually , DC motors will do :
1) buzzing sound or
2) ticking sound or
3) deep hum or
4) screaming hum

The GELID 12TC , its a ticking one, but extremely well made = the ticking is audible only if you touch the body of the fan at your eardrum.
The RPM scale does not effect the noise level of the motor it self ....

The "Side by side" comparison show that the AKASA , is more powerful than GELID at full speed .
I had to deep the GELID sensor in a glass of hot water , so to keep it at max speed, for the test.

The sensor on the scope
About 28cm long cable and sensor , it does respond to temperature changes ,
but its not as fast i would expect to be .
Its sensitive to human temperature , but the 40C its hard to be found in any modern computer case , so the max RPM will never be there.

The power cable on the scope
About 45cm long , long enough .. and sleeved with black color ,
good camouflage , for cases with large plexi windows ;)

Performance on the scope
If i like to see the performance , i would look the reasons that i got it.
1) I did not liked my fans to over spin with out reason
2) Never had a need, for extreme ventilation , even the AKASA fans was on "home made" voltage regulator with 7 & 12V as options.
And i always operate them at 7 Volts . ( when operated at 12V , i got 1C drop in all system sensors , and the sound was extreme)
3) The automated speed control , its a convenient solutions as "Set it and forget it" .

The Good
1) GELID lied about the dB noise , are lower
2) AKASA sounded as airplane on takeoff on full speed (deep hum ).
3) GELID motor stayed less audible, the moving air was audible at full speed, but not the motor.

The bad
The AKASA one , looks more powerful than GELID .
Both at full speed , looked that GELID can not compete as CMF winner .
I did tried to make AKASA to perform equally with the GELID , and i had to step down to 10,50 volts .

Accurate fins design , does not help , when the opponent has " Accurate fins design " too :)

Conclusion
Well made fan blades, truly low noise , modern DC motor , sensitive sensor ,
acceptable quality , compared with TT smart fan , that is the only one that i know with similar design .
The TT smart fan , has more sensitive sensor , but its made to be attached on surfaces (thin one ) and gets damaged easily .
The GELID sensor , its more hard to kill.

So , if GELID successfully compares , with AKASA and TT , there is no worries . :D

Now i have to install them ... and that needs lots of work , on a loaded case. :D

Few pictures for you ...

Mini review part 2 " In the box "

My box become finally silent . :toast:

Installation was easy , the hard part was to place the sensors on the right spot.

For the exhaust one (rear) , i placed the sensor at the PCB , touching two Mos-Fets .
Mos-Fets use the PCB to cool down , and they run hot only if there is activity.
I use Sekisui 5760 , finalize the fixing , and the sensor comes in contact with the metal plate of the Mos-Fets.

For the front fan , i placed the sensor on the heatsink of my VGA ( Mos-Fets ) .
At any VGA activity , the fan push more air in.

It took me some time organize what will go were , but the work did pay out.
No more fan noise on idle ... i can clearly hear any sound from other sources than my computer.

Some pictures from the box, and and one quick benchmark about correct fan activity. ;)

25dB is significantly less noise than your rated 38dBA!

placed on a thermalright cooler, cooling an e8400 (stock) never got more than 1400rpm...so db was never an issue....and in any case comparing carefully...

I can understand your point tz, but kiria's main request was quiet, so the Gelid is hands down for his needs.

Agreed the AKASA is a better CFM for the noise level in comparison.

I know....its just that he could have aprox. the same noise levels with higher ceiling!

Few words about ball bearing fans .... In my past ( 1997 ) i was probably the first Greek,
who got Ball bearing Sanyo Denki 60mm from Germany , using them on one Japanese super heatsink ( ALPHA P3-125 ) .

Nice fans ultra expensive , but in time they become noisy ,
the bearings starts to cause noise.
I had RMA the first set , after seven months of use, got another pair , that survived noise free, just few months more.

At 2004 , i trusted the TT Smart fan ( dual bearings ) , and they are truly excellent .( i got two 90mm ones ) .
For the last five years ,they are perfect . (CPU fan)
(this days had start to disappear from the market )

Good fans with ball bearings its a lotto.

Hydro Dynamic Bearing ... its a new food to me . :D
By testing the new fans , noticed the deference instantly.

GELID uses the same bearings , even at higher performance fans , than the model that i got.
They trust them allot , or better " totally " .

What i have seen in my case , that makes me, be optimistic about the usable air flow ,
are that my VGA at idle , keeps the same low idle temps , as with the AKASA on board.
The deference are that my case are truly silent.

At gaming , i will have to do just one test, playing COD5 for an hour , my GPU was stabilize it self at 75C , if i get the same temp with the GELID ones , i will count it as 100% success,
if better than that ... because fan speed goes up ... i will do a party ;)

It's all Greek to me! :D

Tbh, everyone I've ever met from Greece were some of the nicest and fun people I have ever met. And kiriakost obviously knows fans, I now know whom to consult when I have a question or two regarding fans. ;)
