Zalman Zmachine GV1000 +HD3850/3870

Looks that i got lucky , and got today on eBAY (before few minutes) ,
one second hand GV1000 . ;)

Even if my system has zero issues about heat , i truly like to see how better this cooler can do the job .

Yes, reviews tell the truth , and about 7-10C drop on core , are expected to happen . :D

But what i care most , is not the drop , its the fan its self .

Did any one try to use the cards power plug ?

Zalman uses their own rpm - voltage controller ,
but i am thinking to cut wires , and connect the fan on the VGA, as the original fan was connected.

I am looking to find the DC motor similarity s , so to be 100% confident , that this change will not cause damage .

Does any one know the DC motor specs of the HD3850 ?

Any tips are welcome .

All that i know so far are that the Zalman motor does 3600 rpm at 12V .

http://www.pcab.co.uk/ebay/GV1000.pdf

And the back plate, of the stock cooler has no info about the motor it self.

Nice , get a seat ... :D i got the card from UK seller , in six days or so , i will pas from theory to action .

The safest bet will be to test both coolers and compare their needs for amperes ,
milliamperes in our scenario .

I believe that the third wire on Zalman , haves to do with the LEDs , i do not mind even to let it out of use .

But until this happen , i would like to had at hand , any known theory ( specs ) of the original stock cooler.

Doesn't the 3850 use the same cooler with 4850??
Cos in that case i have a 4850 that i d love to disasemble in order to see the motor amps..
So??Am i right about the similarity or not?

Sorry! Now i see your vga i see its AGP,non reference design with 8pin power connector...
And your cooler looks extremly similar to the VAPORX cooler of my previous SAPPHIRE 3870 TOXIC...
What VGA is this???

Its a Sapphire 3850 , latest model . ( Bios + Hynix 1000Mhz memory ) Two pins connector .

I found the picture of one 4870 , yes just noticed the deference on the plug type .

No way to read the electrical specs from the picture , but at list its on the cooler.:p

I need to apologize to all , by looking the power plug deferences , from 3850 and the other cards , this thread had end up , with misleading title , about the electrical compatibility at list.

Yes the GV1000 works ok in all that cards , but i can not help with the four pins plugs,
as i have no knowledge what this pins do ..

The two pins plug , its easy to play with .
The third pin could be rpm reader , the fourth .. i have no idea.

Never the less , a DC motor needs two wires , and thats all .

About the on board fan plug, the voltage output its not important,
as long the GPU needs cooling , it will send more and more voltage , until the fan moves as fast, as it needs to cool down ... ( My theory ) :)

If i have right , the core will stay at the same temperatures , as with the stock cooler, with minimum fan usage.

The 3rd pin is rpm monitoring and the 4th is rpm increasing-decreasing just like the 4pin CPU fans.
My opinion is to leave the fan as it is.Just plug it in the fan controller included and adjust it from there.Or plug it in a mobo fan connector and adjust it from SPEEDFAN os something...
The hole project becomes more and more difficult from post to post IMO...

Thanks for the info .. about four pins plug .

As about the motor , i check "Zerotherm" .
MSI HD3850 PCS uses it .. found specs :D

So now i know what to expect at list , as all the 80mm fans at the same rpm, use almost the same energy.

Now i will speculate , that HD4870 should had better fan power output, than 3850 ,
so even the "what ever" Risk ... should be allot less . :)

Got my reply from Zalman ... nothing special ..

Hello , i need your assistance , about the complete electrical specs of the Zalman DC motor on the GV1000 cooler . What i need to know are the max milliamperes that it uses at 3600 rpm . I am from Greece looks that GV1000 is not available in the local market. So i got a used one from UK , but with out Fan Mate controller. Never the less , i need to know why there is no info , about connecting the fan , on the VGA cards ?? Can you please tell me , if this DC motor are able to operate with Sapphire HD3850 AGP (two pins plug ). ( Do you have any knowledge of the max available output in milliamperes that the Sapphire HD3850 AGP can supply ? I am an electronics engineer , i need to find the truth ... thanks

Reply

We recommend that you find another way to use your fan (other than attaching to the VGA card)

ZALMAN‘―s fans come with either a 3/4-pin voltage fan that may or may not support PWM (fan control method via your motherboard). Depending on motherboard manufacturers, 3-pin fans will respond differently (usually either operate at lowest or highest speed,). Please check if you have Aligned the cooler with pins 1,2,3 of the motherboard header and not the 2,3,4 for the 4th pin is the one that supports PWN. Also please inquire to your motherboard‘―s manufacturer to ask about 3/4-pin fan operation and BIOS settings. In the case that you do not have a 4-pin motherboard fan header, you will be able to tweak your BIOS settings to your preferences.

Other ways to connect a fan to your computer are

1. for rpm control you may connect via a FanMate2 /MFC2 controller.

2. connect using a ZM-MC1 to connect directly to your PSU. (black is 12V full speed and white is 5V low speed)

3. connect directly to your motherboard's CPU header.

4. use a resistance cable (ex) our ZM-RC56

They send me some pictures with specs , all broken due incompatible fonts .
I ask them to resend , to see if its any worthy info on them.

You probably already know this, but you can simply splice the wires (red+black) from the HD3850's 2-pin plug to the wires (red+black) of the GV1000's fan. The white wire from the GV1000 is for RPM monitoring, and isn't necessary.

This will allow your video card to automatically control the GV1000's fan speed based on your HD3850's BIOS settings...

All true ... but catalyst control center , does not show me any options ..

2) I do not wish to run other software just for that .
RivaTuner does the job .... ATI tools drops down FPS when active.

I was hoping to find some one who has done my theory ... praxis.

3) I am not thinking at all to mess up with the VGA bios.

4) The only risky part , are to avoid damaging the VGA power plug.

My cooler got shipped yesterday , in five days or so i will have it ,
and i will play with it, out of the box. ;)

So far i am calm and very happy , knowing that its truly powerful , than the old VF900.

I found finally info about the Sapphire motor ... Its a 12v 0.23A

I ordered today one "Fan mate 2" for 4 EUR (locally)
I do not like to spent time making my own with one LM7805 and a trimer .

The GV 1000 needs four more days to come, and the Fan mate will be here at the same time.

Just got my cooler , its just 5 minutes in my hands ...
amazing but smaller than pictures . :toast:

I just tested the motor , works amazing well , it starts to spin from 2 volts ,
at 3 volts has enough power to create a strong air wave , at 5 volts its very powerful and silent , above 6,5 volts , the motor starts to become audible .
At 12 v sounds like turbine .
(tested out of the computer case, no card on it)

Motor specs :
ZF8015BTX
12V 0.45A

More .. later on .

Ok i got it on :toast:

I never expected to work that well in comparison to stock .

Before :
Idle = 38-40
Load = 72 -75 C

After :
Idle = 28 - 30
Load = 43 - 44 :roll:

Room temp 18C

I powered it up with 7.5V ( hand made circuitry 7,5 + 12v ) , did not tried the 12V yet .
I have one "fan mate II" on order , tomorrow will be here. (finalize testing)

The temp on load is fantastic ... the truth are that the new cooler , does not have to share the cooling of the heatsink at both GPU and memory .
Ramsinks do their task .

So there a gain just from that , but here i got 31C drop , i never believe that would be so much .. :D

The VRMs get cooled very well too , almost frozen.

Some pics for now ..

EDIT : 12V tests ... Load = 41 - 42 C :p

Fresh AS3 .. in another 24 hours it will drop more.

Ok got "fan mate 2 " did my tests , looks that five volts is all that this cooler needs .

The fan its not audible at 5V , so i will remove "fan mate 2 " , i will give direct 5 volts from the PSU , and i will use "fan mate 2 " for other task.

I was hoping to find the sweet spot somewhere between 5-11 Volts , and it was at 5V ;)

Any way , its an amazing cooler , i sign it . :D

Here is an old link , telling that Sapphire did think to push on the market the HD3850 + Zalman compo .

Does this cooler have any leds? I'm shopping for a VGA Cooler but I don't want any fancy lights in it.

Well its not like Christmas tree , the fan has red LED .

I have my case at the ground level , and the LED was not visible at all , so i put a mirror glass at the bottom of my case , and now i can finally see it ;)

That Z-Machine is basically the VF1000-LED with a bit different color and some aluminum instead of copper I believe. Nice cooler.

Btw, you said you actually recieved a reply from Zalman? I asked them two weeks ago if the VF1000 would fit a reference 4870, still no answer :(

Do not believe ..... check the specs , the GV 1000 its a nickel plated VF1000,
with faster fan.

Ah, nickel plated, I missed that :D If I remember some reviews correctly, it does about as well as the VF1000, and I'm certainly happy with that. You should be seeing fine temps and relatively low noise on low fanspeed.
High speed gives me quite the "whoosh" though.

True

But here is the good part , the GV1000 fan does it well at just five volts ,
the VF1000 ( because of the slower motor ) needs just a bit more voltage,
so to get equal rpm with GV1000 . (rpm to before "whoosh" ratio :D )

In simple words ... with the GV1000 you can use it at 5V, with out Fan-mate at all . ;)
