Hi everyone!

Well the 4850X2 2Gb died on me today and had to be shipped back. I was not overwhelmed by the card as it was extremely noisy and started artifacting all the time. Once Bitten, Twice Shy now.....

With that being said here is what I would like to do with the computer/card:

1. Play the occasional game.
2. Archive videos from 8mm to DVD...nothing professional solely archiving old family vids.
3. Folding @ Home
4. General computer use....internet, office junk, etc....

I have never planned on going Crossfire or SLI and my MOBO is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P so SLI is pretty much out anyhow.

I was not a fan of the noise from the 4850X2....so I would like something a bit quieter.

I will be running this on a 26" monitor @ 1920x1200 at all times with a DVI cable running to the monitor.

So for around $300 I am looking for the best bang for my buck......I have no pref between ATI or Nvidia.

I would like to purchase from NewEgg as I have had great success with them....oh and btw I have to get this thing ASAP as my rig is down for the count w/o the card.

Suggestions and Pros/Cons would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

:)

I was actually looking at this one! What is the superclocked one? Why would I want that as opposed to this?

The superclocked one is pre overclocked so you dont have to OC it, if you OC that is. I dont think its worth the extra $40 though. I'd just go with the other one, save you $40.

so who did you send the card back to, the Etailer or the Manufacturer, best to send back to maker so you get a new card, not etailer, i swear etailers mishandle products the way they store them.

from the looks of things the cheaper GTX260's will indeed be more competitive, but I cant help but feel they will lose their edge against the 4870's in terms of OC headroom, I find where they really get ahead is when they're overclocked to 650+ on the core and 1400+ on the shaders, if they took that away from us then damn.

From all the reviews I have read I did not see defference between 512 and 1gb versions not even i high (playable resolutions). Maybe it is faster in unplayable resolutions by both cards. If I were you I would go for plain 4870 512 they are so cheap and not noticeable slower than 1GB versions.
4870 512 is 160$ even 150$ on newegg why pay extra when you are not going to notice.
Or even better 4830 CF. Get two of those. Watch they to be long reference versions. Overclock the hell out of them. They cost about 75$ each. For 150$ you will get monster for little money.

that being said, over 512mb is looking to be used very soon, and in some current titles. i'd still recommend the 896mb or 1gb cards.

since your saying that with apparently 512 soon to be used, i guess those who got the G80 8800GTS 640 were better off than the 8800GTS 512 G92?

it all depends on the GPU intensive situation, i'd imagine generally a G92GTS will whip a 640mb GTS, except in the scenario's with the newer games where over 512 is needed, id imagine in those situations, the 640mb will keep putting out normal FPS and the 512 card would severely bog down.

honestly 512 -> 640 is not that big a difference, but anything over 750mb would definitely be worth keeping nowadays.

for instance the G92GTS 512 and G80GTX always seem on par, but get into a memory limited situation and im willing to bet the G80GTX does considerably better.

and mad respect to radeon 9700 128, i had a 9800Pro 128 IceQ, largely the same, AWESOME card in the day :toast:
