First pictures of Wi-Fi Hard Disk

EDS Lab. has shown a portable wireless external hard disk drive device called Wi-Drive. The Wi-Drive eliminates the need of physical connection to a PC or Laptop by the implementation of the widely accepted IEEE-802.11b/g Wi-Fi technology. Pictures show that the Wi-Drive has a 1.8" Hitachi 30GB Travelstar hard disk and a battery pack which will last 6 to 8 hours. The Wi-Fi drive can be connected to hand phones, PDAs, PSP, Desktop PCs and Notebooks. It has username/password protected access and data rate up to 54Mbps. The Wi-Fi hard drive shoud cost around $459.

Cool little gaget. But I'm still not crazy about wireless, alot of security problems it seems . . . but then again wired over the internet leads you to alot of security problems too.

No kidding... now when I'm at the coffee shop not only can people gather all the data from my wireless internet connection, now they can intercept all the data on my hard drive too... YEA!!!

ludicrously expensive. even the priciest HDD DAPs (using 1.8" drives, even 60 gig ones) are under 400 dollars. many of them have USBOTG capabilities. a USB wifi adaptor is cheap. there is absolutely no good reason for that thing to be 460 dollars. how ludicrously price-jacked.

i've always wanted something like that. but the problem with wifi is its pretty slow for data transfers, etc, might as well use a nas instead.

and i keep wondering: when's the day we will all microwave ourselves to death with our plethora of wireless gadgets?

Think about it though - if wi-fi gets faster then all PC components may eventually become wireless, so you'd just put it into a standard slot in your PC with no connenctions, not disimilar to Dell's modular PC concept. But yeah, security would be crazy.

Well one major flaw, power. So PCs will never be totally wireless.

Well not until we can further miniaturize fuel cells, whether hydrogen, or whatever. Then you would have a self sustaining, mobile powersource. ...of course you are still faced with the problem of onboard cooling necessary for a fuel cell... oh well

Good point - unless... maybe some kind of spinning magnet around your house and a generator inside the PC? But yeah, I guess the individual components still wouldn't get power unless there was somekind of solar system.
