I am upgrading a friends box and thought I would throw this to the community. This is my best bud so I want to steer him right. He is a gamer but not an overclocker/modder, so I get to do all the build/modding on his rig. :rockout::rockout:

He currently is running this:
AMD 9600BE, Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3, Patriot Viper DDR2 1066 4x1, HD3870 512Mb, 2x500 1x320 Seagate SATAII, SATA DVDRW, 750w PSU, Gigabyte Aurora Case.

He has $1k to spend and wants to H20 cool the proc (never done this before) :twitch:. Like I say he doesnt't like getting in the case, so he needs low maintenance cooling.

I am thinking a PII 940 on a 790GX/FX board with a pair of 4870s in xfire. Really need assistance with the easiest cooling solution that will still dissipate heat from a fairly heavy clock on the 940. Also, suggestions on good case fans. Noise is really not an issue as a fan controller is used. Suggestions?

get the coolit domino alc. it is a very good performer at a low price and what is better, it doesnt require maintenance. then for the general parts, a phenom 2 940 on a gigabyte 790x ud4 overclocked to... A LOT, then a couple of 4850/4870 and ur friend will be happy for a long time

I saw the domino but was hesitant. Seemed to good to be true. So it really is good enough to cool the 940 at 3.8 or so?

I would not set up a water cooling system for him. I would tell him that water cooling is reserved for people who do their own tweaking and maintenance and that he'd have to settle with the best air cooling money can buy and the best OC achievable on it.

Water cooling is masturbation.

is as good as decent watercooling and ultra high end air cooling

LMAO. I have tried to talk him out of him, but he is rather adamant. Maybe just a new V10 would calm him.

Yea, i agree, water cooling is not for him. And since the OP never done it before either id steer away from it. However, the suggestion of the Domino is a good one due to easy installation and no maintanence, alternatively take a look at the Coolit Eliminator, also a reasonably priced performing cooler. But in the end i think he will get almost the same (if not the same) overclock with a high end air cooler like a Thermalright Ultra Extreme or Xigmatek HDT-S1283 or Sunbeam Contact Core Freezer or a Coolermaster V8. It will save him money and make it even easier to install for the OP. Also a lot will depend on the chip he gets, not all 940 can even reach 3.8.

Actually the S1283 is rated higher than the s1284 by Frostytech but regardgless an HDT cooler would be a good choice as very few non-HDT heatsinks can keep up with them.

yeah, but as the ihs of the amd chips is bigger, it can make better use of the 4 heatpipes of the s1284

Get a zalman resarator. Easy to setup, low maintanence and has very good performance.

Don't get a water cool just get a good case I just purchased a Silverstone Fortress the airflow is very good, but it was $219.99 from the egg. The system that you suggested "PII 940 on a 790GX/FX board with a pair of 4870s in xfire" IMO you will see little increase in performance from the CPU, but You will see a good increase in GPU. I would keep the same motherboard put the AMD Phenom II X4 940 in and get a Radeon HD 4870 X2 and get a new Computer case, and call it a day:nutkick:

I disagree. My 940 smokes my old 9600. Hence the reason he wants an upgrade. My benchies killed his. LOL :rockout:

His Aurora case is pretty nice, so I do not think he wants to replace it, though modding it is not out of the question.

The reserators are cool, but I would prefer to go all internal.

Know if any Heatsinks with a big enough plate to cover the whole IHS on the PII? I got an artic cooling Freezer Xtreme with mine. Laughable performance. The stock AMD sink smokes it. Any opinions on the Scythe Mugen 2 for air?? Looks pretty sick and I like the mounting for the AM, i.e can rotate the cooler, unlike the TRUE or other rifle coolers.

I wouldnt, if he wants to overclock the CPU to 3.8 he can forget about doing it on that board, its actually very mainstream and the cooling is sub-par. I would also stick with 2 4870s instead on an X2. AFAIK, the X2 has its voltage limited to no higher than 1.35v and that will limit the overclock, additionally there is no aftermarket cooling for these cards aside from water. Also, id get refence design cards as that will make it very easy to overclock with a software voltage increase. Id also recomend getting overclocked edition cards as they have a greater chance of being good overclockers since manufacturers cherry-pick the better ones and sell them as overclocked editions. Some may argue that its not the case but out the last 3 high-end cards i owned 2 were overclocked editions and they proved to be good overclockers while the third card was not and wouldnt overclock for shit. Of course, there are no gurantees but odds are better with an overclocked edition.

Thanks very much. I was typing out this questions as you responded.

Any other opinions on that 2 4870s or one 4870x2?? Price is about the same.

Also, I am leaning toward the FX chipset as it supports xfire @ 16/16.

Edit: I am trying to talk him into air, but he is bull headed. :banghead:

Just say water cooling will eventualy cause him to spontaneously combust and become a vegetable. Or let him get a water cooling system.

Software Windows XP Pro w/ SP3
Also, I am leaning toward the FX chipset as it supports xfire @ 16/16.

I think 790FX is better not only because of dual PCI-e x16 xfire support but also because a lot of folks had good luck overclocking their PIIs on this Asus 790FX board:

Thats a DDR2 board, I dont know if he wants DDR3 but they also have a DDR3 version if he does:

Yea I think DDR2 is the way he is going, to keep the ram he has. I have my PII mounted to a DFI LP DK790FXB-M2RSh and have had it to 4, but the temps with that voltage got too crazy for me. I have it at 3.7 most of the time, but bump it to 3.8 for benchies.

So I have decided 790FX all the way, now just to decide the air/water and video issue.

Edit: Thanks for all the help. I'm new around here and you guys freakin rock!!! :rockout:

for videocard, the two 4870 are more than perfect. and if u got 790fx, go for asus, they make the best ones
