Seagate 40gb problem

I was trying to reformat my friends computer coz he has zillions of trojans etc. Well after booting via xp sp2 cd I was able to complete the copying files part. But sadly after the reboot it stated "Error Loading Operating System". So I googled and found out it should be set to LBA on bios, sadly it was already set to LBA.

Next I tried the recovery console from xp cd but to no avail. Also did the fixboot and fixmbr nothing. Even resorting to old win98's fdisk still nothing same error.

I have brought home the disk drive and is now connected to my pc. When I try to go to explore the drive it makes my compy crash. I can only run in safe mode and not the regular mode of windows.

Could anybody help me on this? I am at my wits end here.

Freeze it. see how that goes... Be VERY careful when doing this as powering up too soon can cause it to die tragically and possibly a long with your motherboard and other parts.

or do what i did once... Drop the HDD from a "safe" hight = about 30cm, use a folded up news paper on a desk or something to drop it onto, worked like a charm for me, i still have that drive now set as a D drive on another system

Before trying freezing and all that, just run speedfans "SMART" test. See how many errors you get.

It could still be under warranty...Seagate and their 5 yrs :rolleyes:

The drive maybe dying.

Did you try resetting the bios on your friend's computer and checking to see if the bios recognized the drive?

If that is an ide and not sata, you may need to move the jumper on the drive to cable select or slave, if you put it on the same bus as something else. Or leave it on master if you put it on it's own bus.

Ran the smart analysis test and health and performance of the drive was up good no bad stuff found.

The Bios detects the drive as STA####.
The jumper is on cable select, gonna try resetting cmos/bios when I get there.

I tried the DBAN usb bootable utility unfortunately it wouldn't let me boot off the usb :laugh:

When I try it says "Boot Failed" although I can make my compy boot off usb with xp installation. memtest, and other cd image. But not dban...

Currently the drive is in my machine no longer hangs (freezes) on regular windows mode with the drive connected. Ran Acronis Disk suite and formatted it to fat32 LBA.. so far after 3 reboots its still accessible and not making my machine hang... Hopefully when I get to friends house this will work after resetting cmos?

Oh btw ran chkdsk and found no badsectors on it...

DiscWizard might help you out if you haven't already? I'm not sure if that has the low level format tools with it, but if not look for that on the net.

Have you checked for any pins for the IDE? If one has been slightly pushed in compared to the others then that could be the cause.

Yessir, all pins on the drive is intact.

Anybody got info on how to properly make a usb dban bootable?

low level it isnt that roughly the same thing? - i've never heard or used DBAN before. only just googled te name ....

Well what other programs would you suggest in order to accomplish the task, preferable bootable from usb.. Cause his DVD-Drive is extremely dodgy and I'm too lazy to bring along mine.. :laugh:

Seagate DiskWizard/Zero Fill That should do it just nicely, In some cases it has been known to corrupt the HDD so use at your own risk... but thats pretty much only when the HDD is ready for it's new life as a paper weight.

And you can put that on your USB stick, so might save you a few $

Well I'm here now, I've managed to run xp sp2 installer and reboot the drive BUTTTTTTTTTT when XP loading screen comes up with the blue loading bar IT just FREEZES.. So what to do now?

were at a loss here.. BTW I'm nuking the drive as I post here using DBAN on usb.

Any more inputs are appreciated. Thanks.

He bought a new dvd drive :laugh:

And yeah I'm nuking the hdd with DBAN. Time to finish is round 2 hours.

What do you think happened earlier? The Xp setup copies properly and boots up the machine but the boot up screen freezes (the xp loading screen "running for 1st time").

Why didn't you try access it as a slave drive on your pc again? that would of been a good idea.

I can access it as a slave on my machine, the problem is this my friends main drive. When I try to install xp sp 2 on his drive in his machine after the copying files part, when booting xp for the 1st time. It just freezes on the boot screen (Xp logo with blue bar).
