I'm in the process of selling my last 4850 for a gtx285!

Should I be excited?! Or expect the same results but smoother and with no scaling issues .

lol really? I thought gtx 285 was on par with 4850 crossfire, the difference being that the 285 is a single gpu solution.

Physx will be collapsing by the end of 2009 unless Nvidia makes it opensource... but why would they do that since they paid for it...

HAVOK is "ok" does alot more than PhysX with alot less resources... anyone who buys an ATI GPU gets a license to use its SDK along with it. I guess I should make a small DX10.1 sample using Havok and show you how its done irl.

To make it a bit more accurate, I'm very worn out by crossfire and I'm just looking for the best single gpu solution that will match or outmatch my 4850 crossfire performance, which so far from what i've read only the gtx 285 can come close to or on par with.

That is two 4870's stuck together, that is not a single gpu solution and its crossfire bridge is embedded along with crossfire enabled on default

In reality the 4850 does not trail a GTX285 that badly, and here be the Proof. Now before you start crying about the 12FPS difference @ 1920*1200, remember, overclocking, and the fraction you pay for a 4850 vs a GTX280/5.

I went from two Palit HD4850 1GB Sonics to a 280, now taking into account a 285 is 5-10% quicker than a 280 I would guess that performance would be similar, the 280 was actually a little less both in FPS terms and synthetically, having said that........ that very much depends on what you managed to clock your HD4850's to in crossfire, mine rocked, also if one of your cards are 512MB thats all the memory you will be getting so taking all that into account i would guess the 285 will be a little quicker but yes...... smoother.

To really give you an idea of what i thought of the 280 in comparision terms...... I sold it after 2 weeks! of course the 285 is a little better.

Unless you picked up a OC edition 285, AFAIK there should not be any difference between a 280 and 285, the 285 just got a fab shrink.

What I noticed with the overclocked editions is that they are usually overclocked to a range that normal editions can easily reach. But anyways my 4850's were clocked at 660/1050 since they could not go any higher without flashing the BIOS for higher volts.

Right, in that case the 285 should give you a good 10% performance increase if you overclock it, my Sonics were going at 750mhz.

Considering the low volts a 4850 uses, you should BIOS mod for higher volts and see those cores hit 700+

lol I've got such mixed feelings now.. the best ATI can offer me in single chip GPU performance would be the upcoming 4890, but I doubt that will even compete with a 285 as from what I've read its meant to compete with a gtx275

Regular 285 is clocked at 648 Mhz, versus 602 Mhz for the GTX280. So it is faster.

Didnt have a 285, I had a 280, the 285 at stock is faster than the 280 mainly of course to it's higher stocked clocks but in most cases the lower fabrication process means they overclock a little higher than the 280 did.... most not all though...... a 280 would have been as fast as my two Sonics had it not been for the fact that the sonics as individual cards would do almost 800mhz out of the box with no mods.

Judging by the various reviews out there, and also some people out there the GTX285 reaches some 30 Mhz higher on the average. Of course, best overclocker 280s go higher than lower performer 285's, but that's something that always wil happen.

It's a hit or miss, but yeah, potentially 2 midrange cards are faster than a single card as long as there is good scaling, specially with the current pricing. Not only with single chip cards, also dual-GPU cards. See Crossfired HD4870s are much cheaper that the HD4870 X2 and perform similarly. Also while GTX260 SLI is not as fast as GTX295 it does offer better perf/price.
