Should I upgrade my HD4870 512MB to a GTX 285?

I game at 2048x1536 on my 19" CRT monitor and like to have the AA, AF & eye candy turned up.

After reading lots of reviews though, it seems a bit inconclusive. There aren't many reviews that use this resolution and the overall score of a 4870 doesn't seem that far behind and sometimes beats the 285.

The 4890 is gonna be released in a couple of days and I guess the 285 will come down in price soon; it's been drifting downwards steadily anyway and the Zotacs are going quite cheap compared to the rest of them.

I like to play Fallout 3, Quake Wars, UT3, CoD4, L4D stuff like that on my new E8500 @ 4.2GHz system.

All of those games are Ati friendly, so Ati cards play them better in comparison. Then again overally the GTX285 is much faster at resolutions above 1920x and AA turned on, if only because of the added memory. I don't know if that happens in those games. The HD4870 1GB keeps up better, but usually at higher res the 1GB HD4870 is much faster than the 512MB variant.

EDIT: It seems it IS significantly faster in those games:

Apparently many of those games running better in Ati cards is a thing of the past, Nvidia has been doing very well with latest driver releases after all.

I would say that it would make your game play smoother with the extra memory....I bought a 285 not long ago and it seems to me my games run alot smoother!!

You have high demand I must say. For example my 4850 is enough for me. But for AA and that res you need faster card. Why not CF 4870. It would kill GTX 285.

You may get a couple of extra FPS in games, or a higher average or whatever .... but it's not gonna be enough to matter.
My 3870 still plays Crysis and Crysis Warhead on top settings no bother at all, so I'm sure your 4870 does too!
Why waste the money when you could save for a bit longer and then buy something even better when new stuff is out.

I say, wait, save up, buy the best later.

That is unless you're after major e-peen scores in Vantage or whatever, in which case, knock yourself you! Go for it!

I missed that review; nice find. The 285 is certainly a lot faster there, wow. And that was against the 1gig 4870, too. This is the sort of difference that would encourage me to buy it. Shame the other reviews didn't look so comprehensive. Heck, I can always buy it online and return it if I don't think it's worth it. lol

I love that last bit. :) I'm surprise you're finding the performance of a 3870 on Crysis sufficient. I would have thought Crysis would slaughter it? What resolution do you play at? For me, I don't like the fps to drop below 60 in a super high res mode (but flickers) or 75/85Hz in a lower res mode for that liquid smooth gameplay experience. Hence my 4.2GHz E8500... :D

You're right about waiting though - this stuff always gets better, guaranteed.

I know what you mean. I have an 8800GTX that I bought very cheaply a while back and it's performance seems to punch above it's benchmarks, even though they show it to be somewhat slower than the 4870.

No wonder reviewers were so awestruck with it when it was released in November 2006.

If you haven't already, just OC your 4870, its still more than capable of doing the job at this time. I STILL use a HD3870 512MB (2 when I can be bothered to enable CF) and the card performs damn well in games like Crysis Warhead. No need to replace what doesn't need replacing.

Keep the card and buy the geforce. Why? Some games may work great with the Radeon , while some may not work good with the geforce. You know keep the radeon as a backup if needed.

The 4870 and 285 aren't 2400's and 8400's. I personally like my HD 4870 a lot more than my old 280. ATi drivers are much more stable and high resolutions+AA worked better for me. Just grab another 4870 for crossfire and you'll be kickin it OG for sho. <-- failed attempt at gangsta talk

Thanks for all the Crossfire suggestions, people. However, I specifically want just a single GPU solution, because it consumes less power (less heat) and has more consistent performance ie no game profile issues reducing the rendering power.

based on that resolution I'd say you'd notice significant gains on gtx295. but for a gtx285 the gians won't always be as apparent and you'll still run into situations where the gtx285 is strained. you might be better off keeping the 4870 and saving money for a the GTX295. Or selling the 4870 before buying to recoup the difference.

Got me a Zotac people

Thanks for all the prudent suggestions and no doubt I could get something better if I waited, but I wanted a better card right now, to go with my new CPU upgrade.

Hence, I'm now the proud owner of a Zotac GTX 285! :)

And it does make a difference. Quite a bit in some cases.

I get 11fps with my 4870 on UT3 at 2048x1536 8xAA, 16xAF and the quality settings maxed out. It's a pathetic slideshow. In fact, any AA above 2, starts to tank the frame rates.

The GTX 285? At the same settings it's doing somewhere between 70 & 90fps. As the monitor is running at 60Hz, I get liquid smooth animation. Awesome. :rockout: And the game looks and plays fantastic. I'll be sure to try overclocking it soon, too. Tried another couple of games at extreme settings and it's noticeably better on those too.

No doubt a 1GB 4870 would have done better than mine, but it wouldn't have matched this.

A 1GB 4890, perhaps? Much cheaper than the 285, but it would have felt like buying the same thing over again and it's still not as fast.

And the best bit of all, is that my Zotac only cost me £275. 285s normally start at about £310, making it good value for a high end card. I'll be selling my 4870 now.

waste of polling when you made your decision anyway.

Um... no, it wasn't. Sometimes one needs to sound out one's thoughts to come to a decision, ya know?

When I made my original post, I hadn't tested UT3 and other games at those extreme settings; I only thought of that later. That and the low price made all the difference for me.

Best not to assume things, really.

nah, he just has the money and desire to have a faster system. Those frames on UT3 for u from the HD 4870 got GTX285 doesn't sound right now, the GTX 285 shouldn't perform almost 700% faster lol
