Wow!! You are totally and completely wrong.

1920 = width, so the same width
1200 = height, so bigger then 1080.

1920x1200 is a larger and superior resolution compared to 1920x1080..

Simple math really.
1920x1200=2304000 pixels
1920x1080=2073600 pixels

If you mean it appears wider, because it is narrower...then yeah, sure.

I meant wider as... well ...... wider! not bigger or with more pixels... wider... a 24" monitor that's 1920x1080 will be WIDER than a 24" 1920x1200... like the width in inches of a 19x10 monitor is bigger than a 19x12... understand?

Not if the pixels are the same width. 1920 is 1920. if both have .27 pixels both will be exactly the same length, if they are both 24" screens - excluding bezel

I'm a very happy Samsung T220HD owner. Very sharp picture quality and smooth gaming. I've also found that the Samsung's do a better job than a lot of monitors when running at non-native resolutions or resolutions less than the maximum. Sometimes you need that for older games or even for newer games if your graphics card isn't powerful enough. I've seen some cheap monitors that can look a little blurry unless you're running at the native resolution.

I agree... most samsung monitors are much better than the competition when you're not on your native res... I've seen the difference side by side... and sometimes it just amazes you!

btw, a 24" 19x10 is ~20.9" in width, and 24" 19x12 is ~20.35" in width.... I'm talking about the screen without borders... but in height, the 19x10 is ~11.8" and the 19x12 is ~12.7", making the surface area of a 19x12 bigger (0.0109" pixels for 19x10, 0.0106" pixels for 19x12)

nono... 16:10 will be taller but less wide... like I said, 16:10 on a 24" will be .9" taller but .6" less wide....

BUT, the surface area for the 16:10 will be slightly bigger, even if both are 24" monitors...

BUT, I may be wrong, I'm just stating what it is supposed to be according to math...

n-ster: Aren't all monitors measured diagonally from corner to corner so no matter whether it's 16:9 or 16:10 a 24" monitor is a 24" monitor? There might be tiny differences from one manufacturer to the next but if a 24" monitor only measured 23" then they are required by law to sell it as a 23" and not a 24". When converting from millimeters to inches, it will never be exactly 24 inches.

well dang, I'm going to ahve to save for year then upgrade. I guess my current setup will have to do until then.

it's nice to see that the games do get significantly crisper. I like the idea of going bigger on the resolution simply for the desktop size alone, but when factorung in gaming and movies, it definetly becomes a craving. But as you can expect with a little one on the way I've got no monies currently.

And yeah all monitors/tvs are measured diagonally so if it says 24" it's 24" which I guess that's what n-ster was trying but failing to point out. Take a rectangle and divide it diagonally. You now have 2 equal triangles. Take one triangle and use the pythgorean theory to identify the sides. The hypotenuse in this case would be 24". Because a monitor capable of 1920x1200 is taller, as was previously established, the width will have to be smaller due to the fact that the 24" hypotenuse is static. (ie both can't have different heights but same width and still have a 24" hypotenuse, the height and width must be different) so say the 16:9 (1920x1080 max res) is 12 inches tall while the 16:10 (1920x1200 max res) is 13 inches tall. By using the pythagorean theory (a^2+b^2=c^2) we can identify that the 16:9 monitor is 20.78 inches wide. We can also determine that the 16:10 monitor is 20.17 inches wide. making the 16:9 (1920x1080 max res) monitor wider but shorter than the 16:10 (1920x1200) monitor. Of course this is an estimate and the best way to tell is to measure your screen. you can see that while the difference is subtle, it is there.

I told you that I did the math... and it's a .6 diff in width and .9 in height about...so yes the 16:9 is wider

Here are the numbers for the panel dimensions:

16:10 - 1920x1200 = 20.352 x 12.720 inches
Area = 258.88 square inches

16:9 - 1920x1080 = 20.917 x 11.766 inches
Area = 246.11 square inches

That's how things would be if both options are exactly 24 inches diagonally but that's rarely the case.

The Samsung T220 is a 16:10 monitor and measures 48 cm x 30 cm so the diagonal is 56.604 cm or 22.285 inches. It's sold as a 22 inch monitor.

Whether a 24 inch panel is larger or smaller than 24 inches diagonally depends on the manufacturer. The best way to compare them is to park them side by side and get out the measuring tape. Samsung releases width and height info for the finished product but it's harder to find data for the actual panel size they use.

This is all trivial stuff but I learned something new. I thought my panel was 16:9 and the pixels used weren't perfectly square. Nope, it really is a 16:10 panel with square sized pixels.

I think in some countries they use a comma for a decimal point but don't quote me on that.

To answer the original question; Sammy makes some nice monitors at a good price, whatever the hell the size of it is!

That monitor is not that great. Only has a native resolution of 1440 x 900 and a Pixel Pitch 0.283mm.

I personally am replacing my 22" 1680x1050 samsung with a 1920x1080 display, but only because I want to be able to clone to my HDTV (sitting right next to my desk) without black bars/stretching.

If that wasn't the case, I would be going with a 1920x1200 panel, but just sayin, the 1080p models do have their uses.


Also, Samsung's warranty service on LCD's is exemplary.

Another good reason for 1080 is that it is slightly less abusive to GPU's than 1200 is

2.07m pixels vs. 2.3m pixels
