why hasnt nvidia allowed SLI with different cards?

it would be awesome to run a gtx295 + gtx275 in TRI SLI.

It all comes down to money my man. Nvidia doesn't want you to buy a 295 and a 216 to run sli together, they want you to buy two 295's. It's a business.

I would imagine it has something to do with data rates. Hard to make 2+ cards run together when one is quicker than the other.

Should be possible since all the GTX chips are based on the same tech, no? Like the various ATI 48x0 chips, all the same chip, just diff clocks and voltages and RAM.

Well, it does have something to do different clock speed.

Dual socket systems require identical CPUs of the same clock speed as well.

if you crossfire different cards it downclocks the faster card to the same speeds, yes?

i dont think it could work thinking from a technical standpoint

although you can hybrid crossfire and sli and the IGP is much slower so it cold be possible now i think of it

no it dosnt do that for xfire it will stagger AFR or split screen bassed on performance, sli could work if the card has the same tmu and shaders/shader cores, and if u mess with the bios or rivatuner u should beable to change the device ID of a 275 to a 295 and it might tri sli. but tri sli dosnt scale as well as quad and has shutter under low fps

do not i have seen people slap an opty single core with an opty dual core they just run at the lowest chips speed

It should be able to work with the GTX260's because if you sli a 192 with a 216 the 216 just ignores a few shaders and there you go. I think its possible but nvidia wont because they cant be arsed.

Maybe ATi has a patent on it, or they just aren't as smart....

I'm pretty sure its because while nvidia was pumping out powerful cards aiming to be "the fastest", ati was working on better scalability and efficiency in their cards instead of having "the fastest card"

So Nvidia's SLI technology is actually behind ATI's Crossfire now.

This could well be true; if you take a look at the Crossfire 4890 review by Wiz you'll see how well they scale in Crossfire, 92%+ @ 1920x1200.

Very impressive to say the least.

You know, I've always wonder and wanted this same thing since the 7900GX2.

I think the main thing is nVidia is too lazy to implement it correctly.
