firefox with extentions is no more secure then patched up IE, infact many extention make it LESS secure then ie8.

sure :D...also, you're supposed to know what extensions you add to firefox right ? you seem to run many browsers, get to learn one well before assuming things like that ;) Not saying that other browsers, like Opera or Chrome, are not good, but I'm saying that your description of Firefox is soooooooo....oh, never mind

Another vote for SEP here guys. Bloody awesome, far better than NOD32, mainly because SEP doesn't break Vista SP2 like Nod32 v4 does :p
i have run Vista SP2 Beta and NOD32 4.0 nothing is broken, must be YOU that brakes it
btw Vista SP2 is still BETA

and guess what NOD32 4.0 works flawlessly on Windows 7 Beta to

if you compare norton 2009 with Eset NOD32/Smart Security 4.0, norton is still bloated

Kill the process. Instant Blue Screen. It's documented on the ESET forums. "I" broke nothing.

i know FF quite well sorry to say, i ran it for 2 years as my main browser, finnely had enought with the buggy, unreliable extentions, and the damn memory leaks and on and on, moved back to opera as my main, and since chrome and safari4 have come out, well i use those for flash heavy stuff like instantaction where their perf is steller.(webkits perf in java and flash is stunning, opera's is getting better with each beta built!!!)

Please dont try and lecture me about browsers and browser security, fact is that any extention you download can potintialy allow exploits, you dont know if the codes secure and sound or just hacked togather, you also dont know if from built to build of FF your extentions will keep working or if u are gonna wait months to get an update/replacement for ones that are broken.

fact is that the whole "its opensource so its better/more secure" like is a bunch of tripe, opensource has just as many utterly horrible programs as retail has, infact MORE because anybody can put their CRAP APP out for the public to use.

I just get so sick of the "opensorce is better" line of crap......its like saying linux is better for gaming because its opensorce and so is wine..........ROFL.......

and from the official forums eset uses for support
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=235345

know your FACTS b4 you start blathering on about stuff.

also norton AV is not bloated anymore, it uses FAR LESS resorces then nod32(less memory and cpu) currently, nod was pulling in 34-75mb ram use across its services on average for me, norton/sep pulls around 12mb doing a drive scan or when im moving a bunch of files around, again know your FACTS b4 you start spouting BS about stuff you havent tested yourself.

idle when im just sufing the net and such norton/sep uses about 2.5mb ram.......nod was alwase at 34mb or more with the latist EAV built pre v4.

oh yeah, and enjoy the links, they should inform you that you need to apologize to darknova.

EDIT: adding more links for you wiak

nod32 v4 crashes servers including server 2003.
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=236661

and another this time xp sp3
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=237388

and another problem with the "has no problems" antivirus.

so do i need to keep going?

if so heres one more for good measure

Edit: adding more norton 2009/sep11 links and info.

http://www.antivirusware.com/norton-antivirus/
some of the highlights will be quoted.

3) PERFORMANCE

3a) Virus Scanner:

Norton has both a Quick Scan and Full System Scan. On our test computer with 77GB of used space on its hard-drive it took Norton 24 seconds to perform its Quick Scan, while the Full System Scan took 57 minutes. This does seem long for Full System Scan, however, Norton 2009 has a remedy for long scan times with its new Norton Insight.

Norton Insight identifies trusted files on your computer that do not require scanning (Whitelisting), thus scanning times are greatly shortened. For example, on our test computer (77GB used space) with Norton Antivirus 2009 installed on it, a Full System Scan was reduced to just over 8 minutes from 57 minutes before Norton Insight was run - an 85% reduction in scanning time. This improvement puts Norton's scanning times at the top of its class with short and effective scans. A great improvement over the 2008 version.

3b) System Resource Usage:

According to Trusted Reviews, Norton 2009 is 75% smaller file-size than McAfee, and uses 74% less memory than Kaspersky, both Norton's nearest competitors in each respected area. Norton 2009 is head and shoulders above its competition with their new, slimmer and slicker Norton Antivirus.

and the best part that pretty much slaps your bloated theory around.

5) CONCLUSION:

Norton Antivirus 2009 is a dramatic improvement over previous versions. Norton's old versions were known to be computer resource hogs in the Tech community. However, Norton has addressed these concerns with their 2009 version - it's now the fastest scanning, and uses the least system memory of any of its major competitors (including Kaspersky, NOD32, McAfee, Trend, BitDefender and others).

Firefox 3 with ABP, downloadstatusbar, and opendownload is all I need. Works great. No need to get a billion and one extensions that slow it down and conflict with each other and suffer from poor programming by their creators ;)

And really, while i've heard of these memory leaks, I've not ever experienced it even with firefox 1.5  Most I've seen firefox use is 150MB max, and that was with eleventybillion pages open.

But I guess all this is off topic...

rarely read so much crap in one post; I mean what are you talking about  you're confusing everything with everything; you want to give lessons, teach what Firefox is ? draw parallels with Linux, Wine? OpenSource versus proprietary software considerations, what else ?

Or you could just download Spybot Search and Destroy, update it, and immunize your system.. I was getting that same BS popup from all different websites. another good thing to do is wipe your entire internet tracks. CCleaner works well. best part is, both programs are free.

I use Avira, malwarebytes, and Superantispyware. Of which, Superantispyware is awesome!

Twice, my son, was using Norton 2009 and it said it found a trojan and cleaned it. He still got his WoW account cleaned out and got it straight, then he got had again a week later. Well, I got him to run avira and it found 3 more, then Superantispyware found 24(and cleaned them) and malwarebytes found 1 more and cleaned it. F-Secure and Eset say clean, so now we wait and see. All the others say clean, too.

This is not to cut down norton, it shows that you can't trust one to fix everything; you may need to use a couple or so. So, mine is better than yours just doesn't cut it in my opinion. Which ever kills the bug is best. Scan...clean...scan...clean...scan...clean...Oh Cr*p...Wipe...Partition...Format...Reinstall...Just gotta do it sometimes!;)

My two cents.:)

That is a javascript popup, look here to fix, for IE:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/843016

Comodo is great, so far, I am using(testing) their stuff on my Vista 64 install and it works really good.

Comodo AV Firewall Suite, BoClean and System cleaner. I hope they survive and prosper.:)

agreed, partially, about Comodo (I'm still a member in their forums and did much beta testing between cfp 2 and 3). I personally always avoided their anti-virus and the other secondary security software they develop. But I've been and still am a big fan of the firewall and the HIPS (Defense+). Amazing stuff. I unfortunately had to uninstall the suite for now, as I don't run Vista anymore (Win7 instead). The suite is compatible with Win7, but slows down operations, including browsing the Internet. Will have to wait until they produce an optimized version for Win7...but this might take a while, well at least until the final release of Win7 is out (I doubt they would launch some beta testing just for those running Win7 beta or RC).

his page file and his hibernation file would account for most of it.

lol shame on me, I forgot this. You're right it can be just that, the hibernation file. But I doubt about the page file. Misc software only offer to empty it while rebooting, using the integrated Windows function that does it, but they can't delete it. Deleting the page file can only be done from the Windows interface, manually.

...yes, but again, third party software can create restore points, but not delete any.

There's nothing stopping 3rd Party Software telling the OS to delete them.

UAC should at least...anyway if you could give me an example of a software that could do that (ie tell windows to delete restore points) I'm ready to try just to see...not saying that's impossible, but I'd just like to see it happen, even with UAC disabled.

interesting thread here:
