I was wondering if there is a way to get surround from blu-rays to work with the logitech z-5500 speakers. Obviously, the speaker system wokrs with DTS and Dolby Digital for DVDs. However, all i can get is stereo from blu-rays, which use Dolby TrueHD and whatever the DTS equivalent is of that. I am using coax digital out and i'm using onboard sound on my Rampage Formula. Any ideas? Can this be done with software?

should be automatic, check your settings. The board should have its own audio software, if not you will have to use the windows default and change that to "5.1".

well i am using the windows default drivers, the motherboard drivers dont do much of anything different. It may be that i am using powerDVD that came with the blu-ray drive. When watching DVDs i just use windows media player and the surround works.

I'm thinking maybe powerDVD needs an upgrade in order to output multichannel. Its hard to tell though because the software says it is outputting it, but the signal to the speakers is only two channel for blu-ray.

since the Z-5500 decode the audio in its built in receiver wich is only capable of DD and DTS audios which are NON HD audio i.e. DD+ DDTrue and DTS MA.

if you want the HD audio you must get a receiver capable of decoding/processing the audio.

If you got a Xonar and ran analog through your Z-5500's that would work as well.

hope that helps

i just want to update. I had to do a mandatory update to powerdvd and now the Z5500 displays outputs DTS and Dolby Digital when i play blu-ray. Can definitely tell that its discrete multichannel instead of Dolby Pro Logic. I guess the software downmixes it to 5.1 from 7.1, or maybe it just drops the 2 side channels. Sounds great though.

the side channels will instead be played by both the front left + rear left/front right + front rear.

True HD and DTS Masters are separate independent codecs, they can only be decoded by a AV receiver that supports those particular codecs. In addition they can only be send through a HDMI cable, coaxial or fibre cable will not work because they can not supply enough bandwidth.

If those new HD codec standards (True HD and DTS Masters) are that important you will have to move away from "PC Speakers" and towards a AV equipment. The Sony STR DG-820 receiver supports those new codecs and is one of the cheapest on the market.

I have the z5500s and they play every blue ray movie available dts or not their all in at least 5.1 you need to download and install k-lite mega codec pack and all your bluerays will play fine. http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_full.htm

That is a mere "work around".

You might get sound from your speakers from your Blu-ray movies with your Z-5500 playing with codecs but its not "DTS Masters" or "True HD" as those standards are not supported on the Z-5500.

At best you'll get stereo on the Z-5500 when Blu-Ray movies are watched like the threadstater, all those codecs are doing is upmixing the Stereo to 5.1 but its definitely not conventional Dolby or a DTS and its definitely not Dolby Digital True HD or DTS Masters.

Stop being cheap and buy a AV receiver guys!

DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 are different formats - they are older formats and were designed to run through fibre and coaxial.

The newer formats are True HD and Masters require more bandwidth than what fibre and coaxial can support and hence why sound gets downgraded to 2 channels if you attempt to listen to those formats on a Blu-ray disc using those cables.

A few Blu-ray movies have Dolby 5.1 and DTS back up codecs which it can revert to incase it detects a receiver that doesn't support True HD or Masters, but most of the time the backup method is plain old stereo - as in the threadstaters situation.

Guess you need to buy some z5500s before you anwser questions about them, mine never play in 2 channel ever. I download DTS digital audio that my wifes puter wont even play and it plays on the 5500s. Every blue ray Ive tried its played with either 5.1 or dts whitchever it was encoded in. ALLEN

i'm telling you now it is definitely not upmixing two channels, thats what it was doing when i originally made this thread, i could hear the difference. Its definitely outputting discrete 5.1 now.

i think somehow the software is downmixing Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD to DD and DTS, whatever it is, it sounds like surround now where it did not before.

The Z-5500 is a receiver/amp like any other, I know the operations it can carry out.

Like I said some Blu-Ray discs that feature Dolby True HD or DTS Masters 7.1 have the old backup sound formats of regular Dolby 5.1 or DTS or sometimes stereo - hence you are able to play DD/DTS on some Blu-Ray discs

The only exception is the few Blu-Ray discs that features regular DD/DTS 5.1 because they couldn't afford the licence for True HD or DTS Masters in the first place.

The bottom line is Dolby True-HD and DTS Masters can not be played on anything but a specialist receiver, the Z-5500 can not handle it. The Z-5500s came out before True HD and DTS Masters existed.

I’m telling you now it is definitely not upmixing two channels, that’s what it was doing when i originally made this thread, i could hear the difference. Its definitely outputting discrete 5.1 now.

You miss-understood my post.

If you were to do a direct (SPDIF) pass through of True HD or DTS Masters untouched without a supporting receiver/amp you may get stereo if stereo is the backup format on the disc, sometimes the backup feature is regular DD or DTS 5.1 as in spy2520s case.

If you attempt to feed True HD or DTS Masters through an unsupported receiver/amp you'll get an error on the display or hear white static noises. But indeed if you are using third party software such as Power DVD or particular codecs you can down-mix the audio streams to regular DD/DTS 5.1 streams, again this is really a work around, because its not the True HD or DTS Masters format.

But regardless, whether you use codecs or PowerDVD to down mix it or whether its the Blu-Ray discs back up format. If you want to see the True HD and DTS Masters light up on the dashboard onscreen display and decoded untouched you'd need a compatible receiver/amp using a HDMI cable.

Darrens right, i'll say it in simpler terms.

The Z-5500's only support analogue, dolby digital, and DTS.

DVD's come in dolby digital and DTS.
Blu ray comes in dolby digital, DTS, AND new blu-ray only formats.

If you get a movie with only the new formats it will NOT give you surround sound on z5500's as they are unsupported. If the movie also has the older standards, you're set - 5.1 for you!

If you're on a PC, you can always use a software codec like AC3 filter and run over analogue. Sure its a :(, but at least you're getting 5.1

Looks like all questions have been answered here, but if anybody else has any Z-5500 related questions, head over to the Z-5500 Digital Soundroom. There's a bunch of us in there with the speakers, and we know them pretty well :)
