most power efficent cuda graphics card/cpu

im looking for the best nvidea card that has the best cuda performance-per-watt not the card that just uses the least amount of power.

at the moment im looking at the zotac 9600gt green edition that is supposed to use 40% less power than a standard 9600gt but tracking them down in the uk is like trying to find unicorn shit by the side of the road.

for the cpu i was looking at one of those 65w 2.33ghz q8200 quadcores or a 45w phenom but at 1.8ghz they are very under powered.

any other sugestions?

I'm pretty sure CUDA is only for the 200 GPU's not the G92's.

One thing to keep in mind is that with better heatsinks the power usage goes down.

So for sure you want a 55nm GT200 and not a 65nm, but the 55nms have worse heatsinks, and actually consume a tiny bit more power because of this.

So the most power efficient CUDA card right now is either the 55nm GTX260 Core 216 with an aftermarket cooler, or the GTX285 with an aftermarket cooler.

For the CPU you definitely want a 45nm Yorkfield. The 8000 series Quads are more for saying ''I have a quad core'' and they're put in OEM machines. They perform really badly and can't be overclocked as much as even a Q6600.

So for the CPU you want either a Q9300, Q9450 or Q9550. The Q9650 is probably the best as it will OC more, but it costs more as well.

best performance per watt is core 2 quad qxxxxs series. there are the whole power of a core 2 quad on 65 tdp

Yeah haha, blew my mind when I found out as well.

When something is hot, more of the electricity is converted to heat, so the colder something is, the less electricity you need to use, thus the lower power usage.

This is why a stock 55nm uses a tad more power than a stock 65nm GTX260, which is pretty funny if you ask me

Erm... CUDA is compatable with all Nvidia graphics cards geforce 8 series and up. I can run it on my integrated 8100 if I wanted to, in fact I have (physx processing). Won't run physx off of it now as it's become my primary GPU and I really need every last pit of power from it at the moment...

I'd say get 9800GT green or 9600GT green for the video card, and get Q9xxx quad-core cpu (Q9450 would be my best bet).

The 9600 GT isn’t the best card to buy 'performance per watt'

The fatestest and cheap energy efficient cards are the ATI 4770, ATI 4830 and GTS 250. These cards would draw similar power yet are faster.

9600GSO's are better than GT's, sometimes cheaper but are also hard to find - stay away from the DDR2 variants too, they suck major arse.

Is there a particular application that requires cuda physics support?

Because if its for games the ATI 4770 and 4830 would perform better than the 9600 GT despite lacking cuda.

The next cheapest alternative would be the Nvidia GTS250, they support cuda and would annihilate the 9600 GT performance wise.

it would be for running gpugrid on bionic. i know the ati cards would be far more efficent for games but they suck for anything else. i used to run folding@home on my ati hd 4850 and it scored half the amount of a nvidea card in the same price range.

those gts 250's are rebranded 9800gtx+ 's which are die shrunk 8800gt's and still pull over 150W. power effiency are not a nvidia strong point thats why its hard to find the best balance between performance and power.

the card i need has to have a few things

has to have a single slot cooler to be able to fit in my case
it has to have a low power consumption to be able to run off the 200w psu thats in the case
it going to be running in a pci-e x1 slot so no 295gtx's as it would be choked for bandwidth

So, a 9600GSO still seems your best bet. And if you can do without cuda, then a 4770 as they are 40nm.

Easily - I ran my 260, quad @ 3.6 and a 9600GT on my 500W PSU with both cards folding, not a single hitch.

sounds peachy looks like ive found my folding card then as for a cpu im just going to get a cheap e2180, e2160 or a dual core celeron as i aint got the cash for a e5200 at the moment.
