Forthcoming Dell's AMD-based notebooks, which are expected to be available in late October or early November, will be equipped with ATI Mobility Radeon graphics chips, according to sources at Taiwan notebook makers. Although it will not be the first time for the market to get AMD-based notebooks with ATI GPUs inside, Dell's offering will be the first launched after AMD's recent announcement of acquiring ATI for US$5.4 billion. Dell's decision to use ATI GPUs in AMD-based notebooks indicates that the impact of AMD's acquisition of ATI on the PC industry will likely start intensifying in the near future.

They do, and Dell's main target is SUPER cheap: X200

Best cheap AMD notebook GPU. Period.

Yes, but AMD doe snot make good notebook CPUs, in comparison to Intel anyway. This is the exact opposite of Dell's usual NVIDIA/Intel.

Given that AMD Turions are great mobile chips and that Intel still doesn't even sell a single 64bit capable notebook cpu that can run Vista in 64bit mode, I'd say your above comment is very uninformed.

Why anyone would buy an Intel 32bit notebook right before the world begins to convert to 64bit Operating systems is only due to 2 things. Marketing and Ignorance. Obviously Dell knows this and is why they are rolling out AMD64 laptops inspite of Intel's new chips.

Merom is dual core 64 bit. Also known as Core 2 Duo.

Yea?

Something around the numbers of 4 million DELL laptops have been recalled, due to their batteries being now known to catch on fire, or having that potential as well.

SONY batteries, but I wonder IF SONY is @ fault here, & not DELL attempting to "cut corners" & overdraw what that battery is capable of in the first place, & in such TIGHT confinement there is no ventilation as is known to be the case in many laptops, if not all?

Is the problem.

Yes, with MANY things today: F' in GREED... you don't see Mercedes doing that now, do you? Cutting corners, building CRAP, so they make the 'quick buck'...?

NO, you see them build 1 million mile capable vehicles not created for product obsolescence, & overblown marketing hype here in the U.S. as some "rich man's car" whereas in other nations they just think of them as "WELL MADE, GOOD BUYS"...

It's all about greed. Short-term profit thinking... sure, they will try to tell you the spinmaster b.s. line of "well, if you build too well, nobody buys again often enough & we have to downsize" what a load of shit:

They downsize anyhow, because they build shit, & nobody wants to buy crap here in the U.S.A., to top it ALL off... & I certainly do NOT see Mercedes going out of business lately due to building superior vehicles... far from it.

Same in computers... we've ALL seen it.

Heh, is why I (like most of yourselves no doubt) have been building my OWN pc's from componentry I hand select, since 1991-1992 or so!

It took me only 1 system to learn how it's done, as I am sure is the case w/ all of you as well...

It was a "FastMicro" & a "buy of the year" that year (@ $999, lol, for THAT no less & you'll laff too, once you see its init. makeup (it was near "state-of-the-art" then, though!))

I have only purchased 1 prebuilt PC, ever, my first!

It was a 486 Sx/25mhz 4mb RAM & 40mb 4500rpm (iirc on the rpm here, Quantum ProDrive or Fireball iirc) HDD & a Diamond Stealth 24 ISA Windows Accelerator vidcard (1mb RAM).

I end up upgrading it to a 486 Dx/4 133mhz 32mb RAM, & dual 242mb WD Caviar 5400rpm disks driven off a TekRam ISA 4mb caching controller in RAID 0 array...

In fact - I have a NEARLY perfect replica of that, except not ALL ISA like that, but Vesa Local Bus in it here that still runs Windows NT 3.51 SP #5 + ALL hotfixes in fact.

ALL same for most part as its original 2 year older counterpart described above, except Diamond SpeedStar 24 VLB 2mb video, & 16mb on a VLB version of that TekRAM controller!

Why?

So I could avoid "the U.S. car industry (& all else I am sad to say) idiocy", as it is applied to many products, including computers...

We do this all of us... partially to learn & also imo, for avoiding the cost-cutting cut the corners on TOO much, creating marketable & profitable CRAP by comparison to what really can be done!

Crap SO full of engineer's tricks that are supposed to outdo superior materials & workmanship, & often fail, it really makes me laugh.

I have pals who are engineers, & their jobs? NOT DESIGNING BETTER PRODUCT, but cheaper ones... cut costs by 10% this year, or you are gone type stuff.

I finally understand, because of THIS field? WHY HARLEY GUYS WON'T BUILD YOU A CHOPPER GENERALLY - but they will help YOU build it yourself... so you know how it works, how to fix it yourself, & what-not (computers turned me onto that train-of-thought).

APK

P.S.=> Today? Sorry guys... the world has me Pi$$ED OFF LARGE: "Welcome my SON: Welcome to the (greed) MACHINE!" - I just see so much of this, & so much lately the last few years now?? Well, I gotta vent...

E.G.-> Would I pay $5 more for a pair of jeans made here in the USA, that is made well, vs. crap from elsewhere that falls apart in 6 months? YOU BET!

I have even seen it on the job, being told (by morons that can't code themselves no less yet are my superiors, I mean "WTF!!!" what are dudes like that doing being MIS/IS/IT CIO's or CTO's for instance... many aren't even experienced network admins/engineers for Gosh's sake) that is defective!

I've been TOLD to issue products/code w/ "known defects" (usually the WORST kind, intermittent) so some venture capitalist doesn't rape them on time deadline violation, & instead gets them screwed on vulnerabilities present, or bad rep due to bugs... makes me SICK! All because the same moron who hasn't done the job in cahoots with some mindless marketer said it "can be done yesterday" etc.

I was told to "just get it running, don't optimize it to the 100% mark" & build w/out errtraps (as it was given to me - real shitbox rookie code I did repair properly & DID build in errtraps because it was MY WORK & NAME) on my last job in fact... it's INSANE!

What if your bank account, or life support system depended on such code? Well, not far off on the job I am speaking of either... remember that folks.

If I build, I generally build it right as I can, first time out... if you do that? You aren't the one getting the fingers pointed @ YOU, as is the morons @ the top's usual action finding a fallguy... & your reputation carries you into your next place because you did things right as rain...

IMO, the root of ALL OF THIS? The stockmarket... & the banks! apk

The new dual core turions should be coming on the updated 1150 graphics core. It's not bad for graphics. Several newer games were quite playable (i have an msi s271) such as dungeon siege 2 at 1280x800, freelancer @ 1024x768 (res restrticted :p), hl2 at 800xx600, halo at 640x480, even bf2 was somewhat playable (upped to 2GB ram).

There's also that new core sporting x700 level graphics, rs690 which shold be nice.

I used to believe ati had better mobile chips, and at the lower level before this last gen they did, but for current gaming laptops, they dont have anything to match the 7600 or 7900 in power - fps per watt. Hopefully AMD can help change that.

Does Dell sell any Core2's right now? Nope.

Does Intel sell and Core2's right now? Nope.

Are 100% of Dell's laptops right now 32bit only? YEP.

Is Core2 predicted to be a slow ramp in which case the majority of Intel laptops will still be 32bit only Core Duo's and Netburst P4's even at the end of the year? YES.

Does Dell desperately need a 64bit AMD laptop to complement the low volume Core2's when they come out? YES.

Has HP been wiping the floor with Dell because HP sold 64bit AMD products while Dell could not? HELL YES.

Update 8/18/06:
Now that Dell has gone full on 64bit AMD products (Dell Turion laptops a done deal too, just not announced), will Dell take back the share that HP stole by using AMD64bit products?
Probably, but not immediatly and not completely.
