Depends on the game. My friend has a 3800X2 and a 3450 and he plays TF2, Oblivion, L4D and HL2 perfect. I would get a 4650 for it, then use the rest and save up for an X3 rig!

HD 4830 or HD 4770.

As a 2900XT overclocked was to much however it does depend on the game. Stalker was the main one to show the weakness were the FPS would be around 40 but would get lockups.

For how much a 4770 is i'd get that as erocker said.

Just a thought he has the CPU patch for that chip yes ?.. That will help also if running XP still.

erocker is correct your best bet is the ATI 4770 or ATI 4830, they can be picked up for less than $100. However you will get bottlenecked due to the CPU which-ever video card you purchase due to the 3800+ X2 socket 939 being extremely old. I would advise your friend to find another $200 and towards a new CPU, motherboard and ram. I believe you can pick up a Phenom X3 710/720, 4 GB of ram and a basic motherboard for just under $200.

Edit:

To be honest even if his budget doesn't allow for a Phenom II, he could buy a killah rig. An Athlon 7750 X2 for $50, a cheap AM2+ board for $40, 4 GB PC8400 for $45, and the 4770 for $99. Thats around $235.

Surely he can save that?

yeah that's what i was saying first, but then he told me he saves up for a high end system so till then there's some time we have to kill

whatever card you can find that's any good 9600GT and up, 4650 and up. Something second hand. I would set an artificial budget of no more than $60 for the card if he plans to keep that setup for a bit.

Also watch out for the PSU - they lose efficiency over time, and anything 4770 and up might pop it like a fat guy sitting on an air balloon.

I wouldn't recommend anything much faster than a 9600GT or a 4670, anything above would be pointless because it would create a bottleneck.

a mid range card like the 8800GT or 4770 is as high as you'd want to go with a CPU that weak.

Performance isnt the key here - price is. look for bargains, sale threads and such.

Ok... time for an actual X2 3800+ OWNER to issue some advice...
----
1. Most games nowa'days are multi-threaded for at-least 2 cores... 3-4 yrs ago... I would say the X2 3800 would be bottlenecked... but todays games... not really.
2. During my use of my X2 3800+ with an HD4850... very little was bottlenecked. That included Crysis Warhead, FSX and FS2004. Soooo being bottlenecked... maybe.
----
Just get an HD4850 and when you go to build your high end rig, get a crossfire board and buy another HD4850. Problem solved.

i own a 4000+ AM2 and its bottlenecked in anything not source-based. my media PC has a shit card now, but it did have an 8800GT for a while - and with that 8800GT is was sure as hell a lot slower than my Q6600 with the 8800GT before it.

oh snap... I guess it could be the fact that my 3800+ has 2x1mb L2... and the fact the RAM used was 2x1GB OCZ Platinum DDR400 @ 2-2-2-5-1T.

well my 4000+ has 4GB of 800MHz ram, and it doesnt help it. games may be dual core aware nowadays, but you still need enough CPU power to feed the video card AND run the game - and with physics and AI's getting better all the time, that CPU power is needed more than ever.

its a media PC, so i've had no reason to OC it. the AM2 ones might do 3GHz, but his 939 one wont. 2.5 would be a realistic max, and that would depend on how high his ram goes.

that is a brilliant deal. all the parts are low power too, making it more likely to work with his current PSU.

780G is a great chipset, i  mine on my media PC.
