Which one would perform better.

And is more cores at a lower clock necessarily better?

It really depends on what you're going to do with it.

Software Windows Server 2003 R2 as a Workstation now migrated to W10 with regrets.
You won't love me for this comment, but IMO, in the $1500-$2000 range, the Apple MacBook Air running bootcamp is one of the "best".

I really dont like OSX, but under VMware or Bootcamp, the Macbook air is a great machine, if you want portable and workable. Superb keyboard/trackpad too.

If you want the biggest badass gamer/cruncher, then your suggestion is "best".

So, depends what you want to do with it.

It really depends on what you're going to do with it.

Gaming is not the top priority but if I do want to run L4D or TF2 I want it to play smoothly.

well going to throw this out there cos its cheap..ish

Get a refurb inspiron 9400 (diff name in US just type it on ebay) E1705

make sure it has a dedicated gfx ... I.e radeon or geforce...

then easy upgrade to a 7800gtx!
put in 4gb ram

then you got a 2ghz+ dual core
7800gtx
4gb ram
Wuxga
1900x1200
17"
will play tf2 etc.. superbly :D

heres a link to upgrade it instructions

The Asus, or the Gateway FX.

BUT I've seen better results and more positive reviews with the Gateway FX series.
Check those, Highly recommended.

Thanks. I think i'm getting the Gateway. Better GPU, quad DDR3. Should run things smoother.
