Died a silent death (RIP)

Now im faced with big choices

Current rig in specs

Code:
TX750
Pentium D 805
2 * 1 GB Geil DDR2-800
7600GS (RIP)
PQ5-E ASuS (many thanks coldstorm, something is coming ur way soon)
17 inch CRT Dell Monitor
El cheapo Case

You can see except my psu and my mobo im a bit outdated. Wondering what path to take ....

choice 1

i7 920 (a friend is hooking me up at a ultra low price) 150 ish
MSi mobo (hopefully used or cheap) 150ish?
6GB DDR3 1600 99$
ATi Card (1GB 4850?) 110$

advantage mega performance
disadvantage; cost

choice 2

3850/8800GT 4 cheep now ??$
later Q6600 or Q9550 (maybe used) ??$
8 GB ddr2 somewhere inbetween 99$$

advantage: uses the platform i have currently
disadvantage: may be going to a very expensive skl soon and no funds will be available for the next 2 yrs for upgrades, dunno how future proof this is?

choice three

3850/8800GT 4 (used)cheep now ??$
wait for p55, cop 2.80GHz lynfield 140+280?$
8GB DDR3 120?$

advantage; can resume using my rig which was just resurrected after 8 months
disadvantage: the stuff i have to sell may be worth even less when p55 is out

choice 4

3850/8800GT 4 (used)cheep now ???$?
wait for p57, cop 2.80GHz lynfield (160+280?$)
8GB DDR3 120?$

advantage; can resume using my rig which was just resurrected after 8 months
disadvantage: the stuff i have to sell may be worth even less when p57 is out

choice 5?

????

choice 6?

???

help tpu

I would go for choice 1 if you can afford it, just in case something else decides to kick the bucket. Maybe squeeze a 4870 in there.

hmm very tough choices, the 8800 is proving to be long in the tooth so that be out of the way, Id say a 4870 2GB and Perhaps a Core i7 or Phenom 955 setup.

I am becoming known as the cheapskate of TPU so take this with a grain of salt, but I would pick up a Core 2 Duo E5200, which has been known to hit 4GHz, and two 4770s. This upgrade would cost about $280 USD when buying off the glorious golden egg, and the performance will run anything through for a long time. Hell, even my 3GHz single core AMD is fast enough... it can be lackluster at times but I'm sure that's due to the one core... my Athlon64 x2 5200+ felt snappier in some situations for sure, and it only ran up to 2.86GHz

A moment of silence......... now it can be tossed in the trash. :D

It really depends on what you do and what you want out of the rig. Obviously the 1st is the fastest and most likely to last the longest speed-wise, but unless you do a particular set of tasks it may be way more than you need, and by the time you do need that power it'll be outdated (they do run quite hot and are very power hungry after all). So, considering you've made it this far w/ a PD I'm assuming you don't particularly need the biggest and the baddest, and I'll vote #2 as a good bet right now, or perhaps optimally wait for i5 to roll out, but who knows when that'll be and just how effective it will be, it's hard to plan on hypotheticals in the comp world. I know you like the intel but in your particular case a nice x3 720 may be in order (#5?).......

If video rendering and benching are most important: choice 1
If gaming and cost are most important: 2-6

Perhaps to air on the safe side if you have the money choice 1

Choice 3 is what I'll do, except that I'll opt for a HD 4850 now, and wait for a i5 2.66 GHz instead. It costs only $196 and performs very close to i7 920. You can sell your current stuff as soon as i5 releases. There's a small gap in time left, for mainstream market to realise something new has come up. You'll be able to sell your stuff.

your a cheapskate?

You make me laugh

look at my rig.

Well I got burned real bad when I had a perfectly fine system with a DFI 590SLI board and an Athlon64 x2 cpu. I spent $50 on an old clunky Phenom 9500 which wouldn't overclock at all in my motherboard (the board was native to AM2, with the half-assed Phenom supporting BIOS they put out, I couldn't overclock at all). So I bought this Biostar board and proceeded to overclock. I tried 2.65GHz on 1.375v. I ran Orthos, came back and found my PC was off. I tried turning it back on... nothing. By board blew up and killed that processor and my 9800GT (which I thought was the greatest thing in the world). So I got stuck RMAing that board (RMA was accepted) and getting this single core (I had money to get the $60 3GHz brisbane dual but I decided to get the clunky single core for $30). To my dismay, when I tried plugging my video card back in, all I saw was corruption all over the place, and when I tried to play a game, it just locked up with a black screen. My 9800 was dead. So, I got stuck with my integrated 8100 for the longest time until I saw someone selling this 7900GT for $15 + shipping. I had enough money at that point to get a GTX260, still do, in fact I could probably scrape up a GTX295 somewhere if I wanted to, but I choose to stick with the 7900... cause I'm cheap.

In fact I'm so cheap that instead of buying a killer card like the 260 I opted for the much cheaper 7900, which the seller advised everyone of in his F/S thread that it had problems with the memory, which he thought was a problem with the cooling so he stuck a 120mm fan under it and that seemed to fix it. Even though I have a Zalman fv900 and memory heatsinks on it, I still see some dead pixels here and there, which I know is not my monitor because I saw no such thing on the 8100.

I was also thinking that, as i can barely even think about a i7 920, much less anything higher in the range.

Go for no. 1 but get a Nvidia GTx260 or Gtx280 cause they do scle better with the i7...any GFX Card will do though.
