Which chip is higher quality... an Extreme series desktop chip, or a Xeon (server chip), barring the unlocked multiplier and assuming they have the same specs?

I'm still not convinced Xeons are that much better in the first place. I think the unlocked multiplier is far more useful.

xeon have lower thermal specs and tend to need less vcore which can lead to good clocks when ocing.

extremes have the kudos due to the name and unlocked imo.

yeah, but the xeons are a boatload cheaper. my xeon cost less than an E8600, and one hell of a lot less than an extreme.

xeon E3120 $225

intel Qx ($865+)

The question is, is an unlocked multi worth another $500?

So a dual core is cheaper than a quad and that surprises you? And no, that unlocked multi isn't worth $500, not to me anyway.

Couldnt find dual core extremes for sale... QX is an easy search market, EX is not (intellimouse explorer, for example)

Point is, you can get a really good clocking dual for very little (comparitively), a xeon quad core (who's model numbers i dont know to search) for approx $400-$450, or you can throw a few hundred more for an unlocked multi, when you could just be raising your FSB to 400-450 anyway.
