I am currently downloading the Win 7 RC off the Microsoft ws. Now i see that they are many types of builds like i see ones with different numbers. What is the difference between those and the RC? which is more stable, better for gaming etc.

As I understand, and this may be wrong. But it goes from Alpha, to Beta, to RC, to RTM. With a few other greek letters inbetween sometimes. Alpha is the least stable, Beta is working out the bugs, the Release Candidate is fairly stable and barring any huge problems found that turns into the RTM, which is the final product. I use build 7600 which is the RTM, and have had zero problems with it.

Ah, ok thanks so much orbitz for clarifying it. So how come MS doesn't offer the RTM versions? I only saw RC..

I got mine elsewhere so I can't say for sure, but what you're downloading from their site is free isn't it? I think the Release Candidate is just for people to toy around with Windows 7 and eventually expires unless you go and buy/activate it.

rtm is the final version which you have to buy a technet subscription to get or wait until october 22nd to purchase it by retail. RC is pretty much the same thing as RTM with bug fixes and quality testing. very stable build

yer but RC builds have time bombs meaning that they run out like trial software, when the RTM does not ;)

Oh, so the RTM version won't shutdown next year like the RC version?

Nope, RTM means "Release To Manufacture". It is the full version of Windows 7, which is why you can't find it on the site. It is only for people with a Tech Net Plus subscription until oct 22nd (when it is released).

i'll summarise into one post.

Build 7000 - aka "windows 7 beta"
This version has a timebomb, and i beleive has already expired. This was free to download, i beleive.

Build 7100 - aka "RC1"
This was the public release MS let everyone use. Quite stable, and the expiry 'timebomb' was a year after the beta - and a good 6 months after the RTM was due to come out.

Build 7600.26385 - aka "RTM"
Final build. this is what you get on new PC's, off the store shelf, etc.
No timebomb, but not free like the earlier two. Stable, problem free, and my primary OS now.
Unless you have technet or MSDN, you shouldnt have this yet.

When I downloaded RC1 the MS website said it will not expire until May 2010, but might start the "every 2 hour reboots".

as far as i care, the 2 hour reboots might as well be the expiry. its useless to anyone at that point.

Seems likely that he is selling technet or msdn keys. That is illegal, and should be avoided.

and XP users should have got it free, since it was 2000SE

and 98SE users should have got it free since it was well... 98SE

oh and 98 free, since its 95SE

in fact everyone who bought MS DOS should be getting free OS's every time a new one comes out
