I have gone through 2 motherboards and two processors trying to figure out what's wrong with my pc.

Device manager says Ihave two cores in my dual core in specs.
Task manager says 1 core and shows one core, also it will not set affinity because it acts like there is only one core.
there is only one core on the graph as well in performance.
and yes it is on one graph per cpu.
bios says 2 cores.
I'm also having weird issues with my ethernet.
it just disappears sometimes.
My pc acts as if there is no hardware on the mobo for ethernet at all.
I have to reset cmos and reset defaults and hope for it to be recognized..

I'm starting to think it might be power supply related.
I had the same ethernet problem on my last mobo but not the processor problem.

I'm using the same PSU.
mobo and cpu have both been changed out since then.
yet the problem persists and is even increased.

anyone ever dealt with something like this before?
I'm about to slam this piece of shit into a wall..
Just tired of it..
please do feel free to offer any adivice what so ever..

the internet problem sounds like a driver issue and for the dual core showing as 1 core you have to modify something in the os i cant remember so ill post back in a few

I know that there's a setting in the BIOS under CPU Features called Multi-Core something or other. Make sure that's enabled.

yea it's enabled.. cpu 1 and cpu 2. both enabled.

I think if it was driver related the pc would still recognize that the hardware is there at least..
It acts like the pc has no ethernet hardware at all.

I got the ethernet back resetting cmos, taking out the battery, loading defaults in bios.
which didn't work..
until i took out the 12v going into my HD and put another 12v into it..
My pc wouldn't even post until I did that this time..
So that's new..

Have you re-installed the OS each time, and if so, is it from an old XP install disk or does it include at least SP2?

I'm asking because didn't XP come out a long time before dual cores - except maybe Pentium D.

Disk I have has SP2 on it.
I just did a repair with the new cpu
and two days ago I did a total reformat.
I did the reformat with the old cpu though, not the new one.
Should I reformat again with the new cpu?

just uninstalled the cpu drivers in device manager and when it restarted is says cpu 0 is just intel processor.. no name.. odd.
but cpu 1 is properly named.. e8400 etc.

if I go back to my 680i sli mobo from the 750i sli ftw mobo..
am i going to have to reformat again?

I've had at least one case I thought was haunted - no matter what I put in it, something went wrong.

I'm not suggesting you get an exorcist, but if you tried 2 m/b and 2 processors, it has to be something obvious or silly. I don't think a bad psu would cause the very particular types of symptoms you're seeing.

I'm not being arrogant or snarky here. I've made really bullshit mistakes that it took me many hours of troubleshooting to find. For example recently I forgot to plug in the 4-pin molex connector for the CPU.

If you have an MSI board, most will have diagnostic LED's on the m/b that might give you some hint of the problem although if the machine is actually booting up, all of those will probably be green.

Have you tried every combination of m/b and CPU? E.G., mb-1 + cpu-1, mb-2 + cpu-2, etc.

If I have any more ideas, I'll post again.

did that yesterday with the old cpu.

Not at all considering what you said snarky..lol..
Appreciate the help.
LED diagnostics call out FF.. we all know that one. fully functional.

Mobo 2 has had both cpus in it, mobo one has not, but that was having ethernet issues.

4pin molex is in, am going to try to check cables again..
though I did that a few weeks ago.

any idea if I'll have to reformat to go back to the 680i?

EDIT: just rechecked and reran all my cables again.
Flashed bios again with the new cpu.

Pc booted up calling out one cpu in device manager but said ,2 cpu in bios on boot, as usual.
Ethernet disappeared again, it always disappears after I load defaults in cmos.

I have to take out the cmos battery to reset cmos or i boot with no ethernet it seems.
Once i get ethernet on though it stays on.. unless i load defaults in cmos..
in which case i have to take out the battery again.
also device manager registers only one cpu after i load defaults, but it registers 2 cpus in device manager if i take out the cmos battery, then reboot..
always the same thing happens..
but still task manager will not state 2 cpus no matter what i've done.

There can be an setting in the BIOS called Hyper Threading which needs to be enabled

The fix could be simpler than you think.

run msconfig, boot tab, advanced options, check the box marked "Detect HAL" click apply, OK etc to exit msconfig. reboot, open msconfig, boot tab, change number of processors to the number of cores you have, uncheck Detect HAL box. click apply, OK etc.
