The 360 Towel Trick actually works.

As some of you know i have had some trouble with 360's.(RRODing)

So today i decided to try the 'Towel Trick', so i took three regular towels and wrapped them tightly around the system and turned it one for a couple minutes.(little over 10 min or so) So it gets really warm and i take the towels off and wow, it actually works.

But from what i hear it will only lasts about 3 hours. I would probably just be better off getting a new one.

Very interesting outcome for something i thought was obviously not going to work.

Its not a perma fix but it works in most cases. There are some other tricks out there that are supposed to last longer like replacing the x-clamps, or taping stacks of pennies to the ram chips as heatsinks.

Yeah friends 360 GPU fried on him. He had sound no picture. He would leave it on in hopes of it fixing itself (bad idea), it just fried completely since he left it on.

He gave it to me to fix it. I opened it up and removed the x clamp put some thermal paste and he got a visual alright, just lines going across the screen.

If its not to late you could put some thermal paste of your own, should help.

I remember this vaugely... something about the heatsink coming loose due to poor mounting design. The towel trick makes it insanely hot and melts the mount back into place. It's nowhere near good enough for being a permanent solution. I would be finding some way to permanantly mount that fucker down in a way that actually works...

I have had an X-clamp on my 360 since I got it (3 years ago?) I have never had a single problem. Its modded too since I don't like to pay for #*^~@.

Nope, what happens is the lead free solder melts again when you use the towel trick in the hopes that they reconnect the cpu and the PCB.

I'd just send it in for RMA tbh.

It basically just heats up the solder and the thermal paste. The best option is to remove the x-clamps do a lapin job, re apply paste, add in a fan with more airflow too i guess. That is for older models i think the newer ones are less likely to RROD, i dont know if the new models even have x clamps?

If you keep it in a good airflow place that is cool and gets cleaned of dust regular then it should be fine, oh and on extended plays i let mine cool down for a while like 5-10mins, i mean like hours and hours of play its optional i wouldnt really say for someone else definitely do that.

There are 2 options if its in warranty get it RMA for free, if its not in warranty just get Microshaft to fix it and pay for them to do it coz thats cheaper than a new xbox.

I dont like that towel trick all it does is heat up the machine even more its not a perma fix as most of us lads have said, the penny trick is bullshit i dont see how it could possibly work i mean ive never heard of overheating ram as a problem on the 360.

Sorry to hear its RROD but hopefully it gets sorted (never happened to me so i cant say what its like)

The 360 is an older model('07 i believe). And is out of warranty.

I'm am probably just gonna get a new one since Microsoft will more likely just fix it and send it to me and have it end up just dieing again(like last time).

Best bet would probably be to step up to the new model.

if you were considering applying thermal paste i'd do the x clamp trick also just to try and fix it.

My brother recently gave me his 360 that had no video out (GPU), replaced the X-Clamps with hardware from the hardware store and it has been working flawless since. If you are just going to toss it you might as well try it. Cost me like $5 for the hardware and an hour of my time. There are about a million walkthroughs for the X-Clamp fix on the net.

might as well try the xclamps and thermal paste then since you can always get another one

its ashame as i think its a great console the newer models are fine

if you want a jasper best bet is to get an arcade with onboard memory those are definitely jasper

the new elite is shit its minus the hd cables and that so dont bother id just find a good pro/premium 60gb deal

I fixed my RROD for under $3 within the day by going to ace hardware and buying a bunch of screws and washers. Instructions are free on the internet. No problem since then.

Unless you've opened it you still have a warranty. Microsoft extended the 360 warranty to 3 years.

buy a new one asap... a lot of people say reflowing the solder works but it is like most people say... a temp fix.

thats my plan. i have a 360 all disassembeled. wating for the x clamp to come in. had the rrod issue. my plan

and hopefully if it dissapears the other mods will prevent it from doing it again.

but if its ll you can do why not? i mean im biased in my opinion honestly i got the consol free because of its RROD issue and i dont even like xbox's so in all honesty its a throw away system in my case iv got nothing to loose.
