The GTX 260 is the overall better performer of the two, but they are very, very close. I love two Besthesda Softworks games (Fallout 3 and Oblivion). Those favor ATI hardware. The games you play most may factor into your choice. I have a GTX 260 (216) and I sort of wish I had chosen an HD 4870 1GB for that extra 5-10 FPS I would have got from my two games of choice. Plus Nvidia drivers have been a bit problematic since about 182.50 for many people.

I must say though, my GTX 260 plays most games very well and I'm pleased with it.

Fallout 3 compability of ATI choice will be taken into consideration.. thx

they're very equal for performance - the ATI cost less on average, but is slightly slower on average

Nvidia has physx
ATI has built in HDMI audio

choose based on the above info - i went for HDMI audio, since i have two screens that support that.

Yes money i am short with.. thx for the simple answer

its why i went the ATI cards - buying two, the cheapness was compounded (and crossfire is easier these days than SLI, so few SLI boards)

Check this graph out.. this version there has only 512MB and beats the 260
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Palit/HD_4870_Sonic_Dual_Edition/26.html

That comparison is for the original GTX260 192sp compared to an overclocked 4870. Honestly I've had both I feel that the GTX260(216) makes games plenty smooth with everything turned up with resolution at 1680x1050.

I chose the GTX260 because it was better at gaming, yes it had a bit more cost to it, but I feel it was justified.

well I just bought a Palit GTX 260 last july and I must say its a worthy upgrade over my 9600GT. Since you've currently have a 8800GT I say its best to go with a GTX 260 especially at your current reso but if you prefer 2 cards to get out of most performance demand then a 4870 crossfire would be cheaper plus Nvidia mobo doesn't OC well compared to Intel.

The thing that bugs me with my 260 is the temps. Fan @ 70% it still reaching 85c while gaming or is it my ambient temp?. I'm thinking Palit's dual fan cooling is just a gimmick because its ineffective.

For 20 less get the 4870, with how close in performance they are the 260 isn't worth that much more.

It leaves the air in your case where the reference cooler expels it out of the case. Also your ambient temps probably don't help too much. Under OCCT GPU test I top out around 70°c with around a 23° ambient.

yes I forgot the card exhaust out air inside the case instead at the back :shadedshu

is your 260 cooler the reference one? thats a nice load temp

well I got a pretty decent OC despite the high temps thats far as I can get maybe more if temps aren't that bad.

At your screens max resolution, the 260 216SP will be about 4% faster than the 4870 in most games.

Saying that, it all comes down to price to be honest...the 4870 is cheaper so you have to ask yourself; is 4% worth more money?

Both are very capable cards, but if the 4% isn't worth the extra, buy the 4870. :)

Yes that's with reference cooler.

Where are you pulling 4% from? On a very mildly clocked GTX260 there is definitely more than 4% in all but a game or two. Here is your review. I can run some high clocks on my card in excess of 750 core etc etc, I don't think a single 4870 can keep up with my 260.

As fanboyish as my post may seem, the GTX260 does cost a little more but it also has a bit more grunt to it.

Stock 4870 vs. Stock 260 216SP @ 1920x1080 there is little to no difference.

If you read a review on TPU based on a more useful 4870 with the full fat 1GB of GDDR5 you'd see this.

The stock 4870 is clocked @ 750/900...the Ice Q has a modest overclock of 20mhz on the core and 100mhz on the memory..this accounts for the gain in performance over the stock one @ 1920x1080.

Bottom line: The 4870 is the better buy, its cheaper, performs as well and will give him just as many fps as the more expensive 260 216SP...its simply a better buy. :)

Speaking of the IceQ, mine runs at a constant 66C and goes up to like 72C with the fan on auto. Is it running hot? I know that most 4870's run hot in general.

I decided to buy a 4890 instead of one of the both cards I initially thought about getting..
It is also moderatly discounted and beats the 260 216SP 768MB OC in many ways costing only 10€ more than it..

Edit:

After talking with my buddy Sneekypeet i realized that for 11€ more i can get an ASUS 4890 which stands for quality.. usually.. so i go for that one

I hope it has a quiter fan.. i know that it has 3 years warranty compared to the 1 year Powercolor card as well as the Smart Doctor software which allows me to change the vGPU in Windows

Laurijan, if you go for the Asus card with the stock heatsink, you should get the Scythe Musashi. It's one of the best GPU coolers out there. It'll do good to your temperatures, even if you're not doing any overclocking.

From what I understand about that cooler is it doesn't keep the pwm's and all that other stuff cool enough on a heavily clocked card. Unless you want to get separate heatsinks for everything.
