Building new PC for a friend.

So yeah, we got a rough draft done...basically, he wants at least a 23" screen 1920x1080, preferably an i5 CPU for some reason, and a good videocard for gaming. He doesn't overclock or anything, plain gaming.

So here's the rough draft, total cost @ 1310$ CND with free shipping for whole order. (His max budget is 1400$ CND before shipping and handling.


I think we could save him some good money with a Q9xxx without loosing to much performance, but ya...what do you guys think? He really seems stuck on the i5.

EDIT: I have been considering lending him my old 8800GT until the new series comes out, and only then buy a new one...

I think that is a lot of money for a video card that is going to be obsolete in a few days.

I know right...however he needs a PC really really soon. His current PC can't even run the tools we use in our college program for homeworks.

One thing I have been considering doing however is to lend him my old 8800GT until the new series comes out, then buy one.

Yea I think lending him your 8800 would be the better choice, also I think you mate is right in going with the i5 socket as it would give a more upgradable path than a 775 socket, even though he doesn't need that amount of power for gaming.

Yeah, you're right. I completely forgot the new i7s were LGA1156. Oh well, i5 it is.
I'm gonna try and convince him to wait a bit before ordering the GPU. Also, any "official" or expected dates for the new series of GPUs?

Aside from that, anything you guys would change in that build?

It looks like a good build :) if you were to change something, I would change the RAM.
1600Mhz if possible, but more importantly better timings than CAS 9.

Right, will look into that later tonight. Gotta go "fix" my mother's friend computer now.. :banghead:

She just needs an upgrade to SP3 on XP.
