currently got got the first maximus formula x38 motherboard and gonna upgrade, what do you think I will get the higher clocks from with my q9550 the Rampage Formula x48 or Maximus Formula II.

I think you should upgrade your video card instead. That CPU is still really strong and your listed card doesn't do it justice.

The Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P is an amazing P45 board that easily supports 500mhz+ FSB with 45nm quads, and has 2 PCI-E slots for CrossFire. It's also far cheaper than the Rampage Formula or Maximus Formula II.

go for the rampage, the MIIF is not a quad friendly board.
But if you want the most out of that chip the Giga UD3P is the board to get...

cant seem to source a GA-EP45-UD3P would the GA-X48-DS5 be a good alternate or would I not get as good an overclock with it

If you are going to upgrade, get i5 or i7. Going from your current motherboard to any other board isn't worth the price with the minimal performace you will get out of it.

but i have hit a wall on my current MB and i know there are some out there that can get a higher fsb from so just gotta find one, i'll be happy for a while once i hit the 4ghz mark lol

They got the X48 rampage at the egg brand new for 208.00 I just bought another one for a back up being I dont want to go I5 or 7 yet.

When I had a my Maximus X38 paired with a Q9550 I hit a wall around 430FSB and nothing was going to move it, I bought a Maximus II Formula and with the same chip I was running 471FSB stable.
I have no experience with GA-X48-DS5 so I cannot comment I still suggest teh UD3P for you best results but with a MIIF your going to be a close second

if any.....

I have the same mobo paired with a QX9650 and managed 440fsb with 10 multi stable.... on water ofcourse.... and 445 x9 on air with the same chip....

unless u are planning on an i5/i7, there is no mobo that is worth getting over the max formula!

i just bought the maximus formula II after contemplating the same thing... arrives tomorrow morning

I had a power surge and my P35 blew up (even though i was on a surge protector!).
Anyways i have heard that the maximus OC's better than the rampage... and with pci-e 2.0 itll do crossfire nicely (8X8 pci-e 2.0 = 16X16 pci e 1.0)

I own both boards the Rampage will beat the snot out of the MIIF
Maximus II Formula is a fussy board, GTL's will have to be tuned properly for higher FSB stability. Phase Pull Ins never worked so bandwidth is choked off compared to a fully working Rampage bios.
X48 is far superior to P45 imo, only benifit is P45 runs alot cooler compared to X48 so for air coolers P45 is a better choice.

aaah well its too late... i made up my mind

and tomorrow early there will be a ring at the door and my maximus will arrive...
Anyways im pretty sure ill beat my P5K-E overclock with my Q6600.... and if not ill throw a Q9650 at it for good measure and that should see me happy for the forseable future with some new gfx cards in all the games i play

oh dont get me wrong I run the MIIF for my gaming rig, my Q9650 is at 4.2GHz 24/7

If you want a nice stable board to overclock the MIIF will get the job done, but if your looking for benchmarks and high FSB runs the Rampage is the board to get.
