In this week's Sessler's Soapbox, Adam is boiling over in frustration from not being able to play PC games at their highest resolution, despite going above and beyond the recommended system requirements.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw-ak-S3yZI

I think alot of what he's saying is pretty true, especially near the end.

Recommended, like minimum, are by no means scientific or exact. I do wish there was a standard made but no one is in a position to set nor enforce those standards.

Minimum requirements is a general "your computer sucks too much and I told you that so you can't sue me" clause. Recommended requirements is pretty much 100% useless.

LOL, when I saw this my first thought was Who the hell cares what Adam said...(to me is similar to Pee Wee Herman)
Than I actually saw the clip and must say I agree with him. Good post, thanks

i think a lot of this is because things(hardware, software etc) are spread all over the world (and different cultures) now so its impossible to get everyone to agree (or even understand) to one standard.

Of course Adam is the last person to listen to when it comes to PC games.

But there is alot of truth to what he was saying.

he has a point but a real standard will never happen, there are too many unknown variables like different hardware configs, apps installed, the resolution you want to play with and the list goes so on and so on, its just not possible to get a definite standard.

Benchmark Scores I don't benchmark.
They should be more clear on what "recommended" and "minimum" requires will give you. Yeah, we get we need at least this, but to do what? Get past the Install menu?

Hell, according to the back of the box, Fallout 3 should not run on my friends computer running an 780G. A little OCing, run everything on Low except textures on medium and boom playable frame rate.

I don't know if I am alone, I once had a game flat out refuse to install on a computer it determined did not have the minimum requires to play the game. This was just an error with the installer which used an online database list of cards that will work. The card was not on the list even though it could easily play it.

I think he would be happy with games locked to 1280x720, like consoles, but if PC gamers are happy with that, we would all be playing consoles.

PCs are not consoles! There is no standard hardware configurations, so all those settings need to be there. It has to run on the computer with a x600 and the computer with Crossfired HD5870s.

It wouldn't make sense to make the recommended specs super high, no one would buy the game.

Sessler is a D-Bag. Anyone ever met him in person?

I relate to his argument, 'recommended specs' need to be re-evaluated. PC gaming manufactures need to be upfront and say that you can play the game, but at low settings without a fast ass processor and current gen GFX card. Hell were(TPU gamers collectively) all keen on PC gaming and hardware we know it's not how much you pay for it, but how well it preforms for our specific needs!

Or maybe the "Recommended Specs" should now say "Tomorrow's Hardware"
Cause he is right. A lot of games that have those recommended settings don't play at extremely high quality.

Course maybe that is why Cryostasis doesn't play right...Doesn't support XP x64

I think they should add a new list to the minimum and recommended called "enthusiast" or something, basically a list of what you'd need to play it absolutely maxed with max AA and filtering at full HD (1920x1080) and get good (50+) frames per second. Just my 2 cents.

With me its mostly jealousy, it stems mostly from him getting paid to hang out on TV with Olivia Munn and goof off.

I NEVER took him seriously on G4 but when I saw the you tube clip he looked/sounded much more believable to me.

That would be good sj as it can be quite misleading reading minimum and recommended specs.

One complaint I have with games is that to get the most out of them requires .ini edits, but most normal people probably won't mess around with looking up the .ini tweak guides online. Another complaint which is related to my first complaint is that many games aren't configured to use a decent amount of available ram; on occasion when I do look up those ini tweak guides I find some of my games probably will only be configured to use about 512mb of ram, but with ini tweaks that can be pushed up a bit higher resulting in smoother play. Basically I just want more common sense in game tweak options so that I don't have to edit the .ini files. If I set the game to ultra high in game, then I shouldn't then have to look up a tweak guide online to edit the .ini files to make the game use more then 512mb of ram or to enable multi threading.

I find that the biggest frame rate killer is shadows, so even if I set everything to "ultra high" I'll still change shadows to medium. NWN2 and the large shadows==OFMGWTFLMAO-frame-rate-killer.
