The only way I can see fixing it would be using the Windows disk to do a recovery since you cannot get into Windows.

okay she just did that, didn't need to press f8 since it brings her to the screen with the white letters each time she restarts, she pressed on "last known good configuration" and it restarted at the WINDOWS XP loading screen again.

Sounds like the W32.Vitro / Virut. If it is, the only known solution is a complete format and reinstall. If it is the Vitro / Virut virus, any USB sticks that have touched that laptop since its been infected are also infected. The reason I say this virus is it exhibits the exact symptoms you describe and has been getting more common.

Hopefully it isn't but there's a name for you to research.

I think your options are limited...reformatt with the computers restore disks (I would save data first !!!!) maybe remove the drive and run error checking on the lappy harddrive and fix ..its worked for me lots of times.....GL

EDIT: I also agree with Fiendo Too as I said in my first post.

shit this is a lot of stuff for a girl to do. hmmm you think if she puts in a recovery disk and does the recovery if that would work? or does she really need to do a whole reformat?

I believe the restore disks actually reformat everything except the hidden partition.

Definitely do a reformat for Viruses.

Its not hard, what i do is take the Windows CD and put it in my disk drive, then i restart the system and boot from the CD (you may have to go into your BIOS and set your CD drive as your first boot device). Once it boots up you need to delete the partition and once deleted you can reinstall your OS on the new/fresh partition.

If its to much just go to google and it should walk you through the process.

just to make sure it isnt some sort of hardware failure press F8 after the system posts while windows is booting up, it should bring you to a big list of options on how to start up windows. select disable shut down on system failure, if the system blue screens type in the stop message in microsoft's website under the search bar. hope this helps :)
