Why not have a Windows section?

I figure there is a Linux/OSX/FreeBSD section, why not have a section dedicated to Windows? It would help weed out the Windows specific questions from the General Software section, and leave that dedicated to software questions that don't relate specifically to an OS.

Just and idea.

True, but there isn't really a place to ask Windows specific questions. Like my bootscreen issue(which got me wondering about this). I mean, I can post it in General Software, it fits best there, but wouldn't it be better to post something like that in a Windows specific section?

i think it would be cool if we had a windows tech support forum, just specific issues with windows versions, maybe starting only with xp and going forward, make different sub forums for each version of windows and post problems and solutions in there.

on the other hand it seems like a lot of breakdown for a largely windows based site, however i do miss the tweaks threads we had, someone should put the vista one back up lol

Windows section with sub sections sounds good to me. I've been wondering the same thing.

yeah I like the idea, I think it would narrow down the general software section to questions about...well...general software

i've always wondered about the lack of a windows section myself

after all, if windows fits into General Software, why wouldn't the other OSes? in the times of Political Correctness, thats just OSism! or it would be said, that if linux/osx/freebsd has its own section, why cant windows? OSism i say!

on a more serious note, i do think that a dedicated section to the windows operating system would be a good idea, for better organization of topics if nothing else

Gonna add support for this movement. It seems Windows threads get buried too easily in the Software forum.

I've always thought the same thing as well. With Windows 7 coming out I think it'd be a great idea to have one, maybe organize it by specific OS (XP, Vista, 7) or by the type of troubleshooting help people need.

Well if we do it like that then we might as well have a section with infinte sub sections.

I mean like this DVD then all the brand names would be to much.

DVDs>Panasonic
DVDs>Sony
DVDs>Audiovox
DVDs>Coby
etc...

What we should have is an OS Section and Under it Windows, Linux and Mac. That way we have everything and its not as bad...

EDIT: oops FatForester had pretty much said the same thing as I. My Bad.

whilst at first i thought

"this is a stupid idea"

Now i think it would be useful and indeed helpful to find threads that are specific to your needs.

you cant get this specific, especially "by the type of troubleshooting people need". after all, a lot of people who come here wont know what type of troubleshooting they need, they will only know that
A. they have a problem
B. they have a windows OS
C. they might know which windows OS and
D. if theres a windows section, thats splits into the different windows os'es, it would probably be better to post their problem/question in that apropriate windows sub catagory.

now, if you broke this down into troubleshooting, it strikes me that stuff would get posted everywhere and mods would be constantly moving threads around.

having a windows section is a good idea, split into the different windows os'es, but nothing beyond that.

imo anyway...i meant to give offense to noone, though in re-reading my post it could be construed as a flame...it isnt, just was trying to explain

I agree an OS section would be nice, with Windows, Linux, Mac under it, prob the best way to go. But that would technically be more subforums than anyone had mentioned, so your DVD comment would pertain more to your suggestion than the previous ones

It's a good suggestion, but an over the top example :)

It's called General Software. The reason a *nix/Mac section was created was to prevent *nix/Mac-related threads from being buried under a rubble of Windows and Windows-based software threads.

I think of general software as any game or anything else I install that goes to my Program Files. And there wouldn't be a Program Files without Windows or another OS. Could just turn the General Software into "Software" then 3 sub forums as "General", "Windows", "OS X/Linux". Just like how the Videocard section with AMD and NV is ran.

And the problem is that Windows specific problems are being burried under the rubble of General Software threads and vise versa.

When I see General Software, it makes me think of software that is installed under and OS, not any OSes themselves. I see Software as being different from and OS. I know, they are both technically software, but I consider them two different beasts.

I just think if they were seperated, it would eliminate a little confusion and clutter. Especially with the release of Windows 7 coming up, we are bound to have a flood of Windows 7 releated issues, and it will likely overshadow the other software issues if they are left in the same section.

And instead end up cluttering the forum index. One new section at a time. I think general software is doing its job in Windows OS related threads. I won't use that as an argument against the *nix forum.

We've had Windows 7 beta and RC around for a while. Not many issues with it. So Windows 7 is going to be a smooth launch. There isn't much activity in General Software anyway, so there's room for dozens of Windows 7 related threads.

You really think the Windows 7 beta and RC is anywhere near as used as the actual release will be?

Out of 25 topics on the first page of Genral Software, 10(40%) are Windows 7 related and 15(60%) are Windows specific problems.

You really don't think there will be an increase in Windows 7 problems and questions once the software is actually released to the general public? Only a very small fraction of people are actually using Win7 right now, despite the availability of the RC. If you think there won't be an increase of Win7 questions once the general public gets their hands on it, you're crazy.

And adding one section to the forum index is hardly cluttering it. Please, are you serious here...

btarunr i must say that, while i understand your point, i must respectfully disagree. i fail to see the disadvantage of adding a subsection to general software for windows specific os problems or make a seperate windows section period with different windows os subsections.
but im not a "powers that be" so im just gonna leave it at that

I think it would be good for new users to TPU and at the same time keeping things more organized for people who already know where to find everything easily on TPU.

When Windows 7 is released you must realize not everyone in the mainstream market has already been using it, so newer Win7 folks will be looking for a place to get answers.

And adding one section to the forum index is hardly cluttering it. Please, are you serious here...

Yes, dead serious. TPU Forums owes it to a simple forum index. Unless it's really needed, a new forum isn't added. So TPU's policy would be to find arguments against creation of new forums, and create them when the opposition gets a stronger argument. We have 40 public forums on the index already.

Creation of a Windows forum wouldn't guarantee that members end up posting in the right section, and there's a thin line between application software that run on windows, and application software that 'run' Windows. It only adds to the confusion.
